3. I was born to Manhattan but moved to Queens when I was 14
Dropped the Yankees, started rooting for the Mets. All that.

I haven't been back to Queens since my parents left, but I'm still a Queens partisan. It's the borough that don't get no respect.

10. My Ex's Family Were Lifelong Brooklynites
and to them, "New York City" or even just "New York" meant Manhattan. As in "I'm going to New York." Just sayin'.

29. That always confused me too
When I lived in Queens, "going into the city" meant Menhattan and "going out on the island" mean Nassau and Suffolk. This despite the fact that Queens is geographically part of both Long Island and New York City.

There's a strange not-there-ness about it all. At least Brooklyn was a city of its own before New York ate it up. Queens wasn't even that.

Here ya' go...
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 01:39 PM by mcscajun
Archie Bunker was from Queens...the 12th Precinct (Barney Miller's 'house') was in Manhattan, as were the Jets and the Sharks (movie was filmed in the crumbling neighborhood that was razed to build Lincoln Center.)

Ask me more... :)

on edit: oh yeah...and Hal Linden, who played Barney Miller? He once lived in The Bronx. :)

13. I can't be the Only Bronx girl in DU....can I?
I may live in NJ now...but I'm really just living in exile from The Bronx. In the late 50's and early 60's, a truly marvelous place to live. I spent some years in Manhattan (late 70s to end of 80s). I don't miss Manhattan much at all, although I still go into the city for theater on occasion. It's The Bronx of my youth I miss...a place of neighborhoods, good Italian bread, the BEST pizza in the world!, The Bronx Zoo, the NY Botanical Gardens, and all within walking distance from my stoop. (that'd be front steps of the apartment house for you non-NY'ers.)

33. I go up there every weekend.
My best friends live way the hell uptown in the Boogie Down, and I spend 1 1/2 - 2 hrs on three trains every weekend to hang out with them.

People tend to equate the Bronx with the West Bank, and while parts of it do look like that, there are some nice areas (like where my friends live, almost near the end of the 6 train). There are some great little ethnic food markets in their 'hood (Italian, German, and increasingly more Indian).

I prefer Brooklyn myself but I think the Bronx gets a bad rap. If people would just give it a chance they'd see it's actually pretty cool.

14. Helloooooo Broooooklyyyyyn!!!
New York New York it's a hell of a town
The Bronx is up and I'm Brooklyn down
They don't know my name they only know my initials
Building bombs in the attic for elected officials
I quit my job I cut my hair
I cut my boss cause I don't care
You tried to get slick you bust a little chuckle
You're gonna get smacked with my gold finger knuckle
Cause being as fly as me is something you never thought of
You'll be sticking up old ladies with the hand gun or the sawed-off
Like a buffalo soldier I'm broader than Broadway
Keep keepin' on I don't care what they say
I play my stereo loud it disturbs my neighbors
I want to enjoy the fruits of my labor
I am the holder of the 3-pack Bonanza
If you open the book then you will get your hand slapped
I am the keeper of the 3-pack Bonanza
If you ask a question you will get the answer
Her breast I saw I reached I felt
M.O.N.E.Y. the belt
I stay at home just like a hermit
I got the jammy but I don't got the permit
Yes you got a boyfriend and indeed his name is Slick Nick
that is why Annabelle you're caught with the shrimpy limp dick trick
I ride around town cause my ride is fly
I shot a man in Brooklyn *just to watch him die*

Yes, sirree, step right up! These here rockets went all the way to the Moon, yes, that Moon right up there, and now we've got them here in Flushing Meadow Park.

Oh, and that reminds me of the ice rink in the park, and the theatre with the map of NY State on the (crumbling) floor... Sigh, I wanna go home!

Except for those crazy ass streets you have. I swear, to drive in Queens it seems like you need to be part of some super-secret club.

Me, I just take the 7 train over there (aka The Orient Express :D). I love hanging out in Flushing and Jackson Heights. Great food and some sweet shopping to be had.

And would not trade it for anything in the world. Even if I could afford to live in Manhattan I wouldn't want to.

In fact I wish those damn Manhattanite yuppies would stop coming over the river and driving up the freaking rents over here. HATE.

40. Manhattan, Manhattan, Manhattan...
...I live right by Museum Mile and there's no place I'd rather be. Besides, it's home--I grew up on the Upper East side, and have lived most of my adult life, here.

Tried living in Brooklyn (Williamsburg) and it had its points, but there were times when I almost felt like I wasn't living in a world class city, anymore. I really, really, really missed Manhattan.

Incredible music scene, great art scene, and I have plenty of friends there whose couches I can flop on whenever. Manhattan's nice, Manhattan's a lot of fun to visit, but Brooklyn's got the real goods.
