Help! Want to vaction in/near VA, WV, MD for xmas
Has anyone vacationed in this area of the country? Been to any places you would highly recommend? We are looking for a romantic getaway for the week after Xmas. We are shooting for a log cabin-type of place with a fire place, a hot tub/jacuzzi, a nice, comfortable bed with skiing and ice skating (preferably a frozen over lake of some sort) near by.

We're getting pretty desperate trying to obtain info through the search engines has been a nightmare. We are hoping that recommendations from politically like-minded people is a better way to go than just by looking at pictures on some website!

Please if you have any advice, don't hesitate to reply :)

for a frozen-over lake in this part of the country by the week before Christmas. And I hope you aren't counting on snow cover either, although in Western Maryland you might get lucky.

You could try Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. It's a national park on Skyline Drive in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I haven't stayed there but my parents did once and really enjoyed it.

On edit:

Cacapon, West Virginia has a nice resort. It isn't in a log cabin but they have great lake sports and horse back riding.

2. Absolutely. Cass West Virginia!!!!
This place is perfect.
An old mill town built on the side of a mountain which is now a State Park. Near SnowShoe Ski resort.
All little houses are redone and you can rent one quite cheap. I went 13 yrs ago and it snowed and deer were walking around in the yard and maybe only 2 other families there. It was like having the entire mountain town to ourselves!!!There is a river and a train track with an old passenger car. To my knowledge it is still in operation. Beautiful landscape, privacy, value. We went for Thanksgiving-2 couples. It was so much fun and so pretty, I'll never forget. Google Cass West Virginia State Park

5. Hard to get to but a very good idea
I don't know the lodge in particular but I would suspect that that area would have something like that.

11. Canaan Valley's the place once the snow hits................
All the skiing you could shake a stick at, cozy little places to lodge and some decent food (Sirianni's in nearby Davis, WV serves the best white pizza - ever). I grew up 30 minutes from there and have spent alot of time in Canaan and I'd say there's no prettier place in the winter.

I know the owner of White Grass. He's a great guy. Are you coming to Jack Frost this year?

8. Wintergreen resort in Virginia
It's a very nice, smaller resort, a little less expensive than some of the other are ski resorts. Although I don't know about ice skating there, but you could take a day trip through Virginia wine country while you're there which is very fun. Lots of different types of places you could rent, from small rooms right on the slopes, to houses back in the woods. It's a pretty secluded area right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and the mountain views are amazing.

9. There is a really nice resort near Cumberland, MD.
It's called Rocky Gap. It looks like a Swiss chalet. It's in the middle of a state park. I don't know if there is skiing there, but Deep Creek is nearby.

We went there in May and again in June. We really loved it. :)

10. Do you know of any type of place that isn't necessarily a "resort"
the smaller the better...

Yea, last time we went iceskating on a real lake, it was on a lake in NH the week after Christmas, and we were in the middle, and starting hearing that sonic boom cracking going on...and we flew back to the edge of the lake:) Perhaps we will have to do with manmade!

But would like skiing/jacuzzi (private) and maybe log cabin....

15. Washington VA
Not Washington, DC but Washington, VA is a very small town which never changed much since colonial times and it can be very interesting if you are looking for a romantic setting. The inns are great!

Here is the brochure if you are interested:
