Terry Gilliam took a crack at it and pulled out, and most recently, Darren Aronofsky pulled out as well. Currently, the director is the guy who recently did The Bourne Supremacy...

It was a fantastic story all around, but their was a lot of complexity and history that will hard to put onto the screen.
