Getting fired sucks.
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 10:44 AM by GOPNotForMe
Especially when it's this close to the holidays. And when your bosses don't even bother to discuss it with you or outright tell you - when you have to just look at the next month's schedule to see that your name is missing. And when it's for the most idiotic passive-aggressive reasons.

I hate life right now.

2. Oh wow that is so awful
That happened to a friend of mine last year. He had taken a week off for deer hunting, and then when he called to check to see what his schedule was after his vacation, they told him not to bother coming in and they'd send him his last check. He never did find out why - but it sounds like it was just downsizing.

So sorry - hopefully you'll find something even better.

9. Same thing happened to me...

Went on vacation for a week... On Friday, I was enjoing my last day of vacation, or so I thought, when Fedex showed up at my door with an Overnight envelope... Your position has been terminated, it said... Six years of faithful service and not even a reason... Not even a phone call...

That's when I decided to open up my own business and NEVER again work for somebody else...

Oh yeah, and they tried to fight me on unemployment too... Since they had no good reason, they lost... Thank God!

Please hang in there... It's probably for the best... You would have wasted more good years on a place that doesn't deserve it...

Call unemployment first thing tomorrow morning... That will allow you some time to look for something else...

Good luck!

33. On my first day of vacation...
... the boss called me on the phone and threatened to fire me. Why? Because I advised another employee on her unemployment rights. My boss then wished me a happy vacation. She later transferred me to another department where my new boss appeared to be super-friendly. He then fired me. They also contested my unemployment. The state of Oregon sent me a letter entitled "THE TRUTH" followed by an untranslated paragraph in Spanish and the question: "Did you do the very best you could?" Employers can bite me, every one of them.

11. That sounds similar to what happened to me.
They asked me if I wanted to NOT work on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I said I'd prefer not to (remember, they asked). So they schedule me for this morning instead of Friday. And then they tell me that not working after Thanksgiving is one of the primary reasons for firing me. My brain cannot compute.

6. I did
Ask my boss, that is. She said that I made it clear that I wanted to leave because a while ago I told her that I was taking on some more volunteer projects, when all I was doing was MAKING F-----G CONVERSATION. And there are only 3 employees here, so there's no way for anyone to accidentally not be scheduled for a whole month.

Sigh.

Thanks though.

5. I just got laid off
CFO told me the day before Thanksgiving, effective Dec. 31. They gave me better notice than you got, and I'll get some severence, which means I'm a lot luckier than many people, but it sucks nonetheless.

The company is doing fine, they have plenty of money, that's not why I'm gone. I'm gone because of some changes in corporate structure, and I was one of a couple dozen who they "had" to let go. It's sickening what shareholder ownership of corporations does to the people who do the work.

It's a real drag.

7. Yes, it is.
I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. Ever since I've worked, I've always tried to keep in the back of my head that no matter how nice your bosses seem or how interested in you they seem, in the end, you're just a gear in their machine, a method to making money, and they will treat as such eventually.

It just sucks when you realize it's true.

15. it should be illegal to dump workers on a whim with no warning.
In fact, see, if you were in France your boss just could NOT give you the pink slip without A) a good reason and B) a 3 weeks advance notice.

The land of the free...yeah right..the land of the free to abuse!!!!!!!

I'm very sorry. One more reason to fight for workers rights. Something the repugs hate.

16. I'm sorry you got fired. That really sucks. File for unemployment if
you have either enough time at the job or you made a certain amount (go to the website for your state's unemployment insurance information).

Check this out: I found out I was going to be fired two weeks before it happened when I read the classified ad announcing the vacancy of my position hours after it was posted on the newspaper website. Finding the faxed resumes on Monday morning confirmed I wasn't paranoid.

Get yourself a better job, a better employer, and enjoy whatever you do.

20. You want "frank"? I'll give you "frank".
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 11:21 AM by no_hypocrisy
Two jobs before the one I cited, I was fired in the following manner.

I had literally finished the BEST day of work I had had in 30 years of working. I made miracles happen that day. I would've accepted a Thank You. That didn't come. What I got in its place was my boss going psycho. Unjustifiably psycho. He yelled (referring to me) "It's like a conspiracy! It's like she's out to get me!!" Loud enough for the entire office to hear. He strode into the office manager's office, slamming loudly the metal door behind him. Everyone looked stunned. I finally broke the silence, and rhetorically stated, "Do you think I'm fired yet?"

Four hours later, I picked up a message from the office manager, apologizing for leaving the news on a machine, that the boss didn't think things were working out, that I should come by early the next day to pick up my things and drop off the keys.

Well, I didn't agree with his opinion. Earlier this year, my ex-boss wanted to be elected to the Village Counsel, and I didn't think he qualified for the job. So I joined the campaign of two other candidates. The result? Nine candidates vying for three seats. Ex-boss came in fourth by a distant 100 votes. And he knew my political activities during the election. Ain't democracy great?

Anyway, I made my point, and can move on.

But that's as "frank" as it gets, isn't it?

19. I got cut two weeks ago Friday
from a contract assignment, without being given a reason. It took me two months of unemployment and five interviews to get this and it was supposed to be a four month assignment. Well, the onsite manager just walked up to me and told me that they didn't need me- my own agency was supposed to tell me, but the guy never even called.

When I called my company they didn't know anything about it and the account manager was apparently out golfing, hunting, fishing, watching football, whatever. I called the next Monday and only got to talk to one person who said he didn't have any idea what happened. They cut off my email and I haven't heard a word for two weeks now. I don't even know if they're giving me dismissal pay for two weeks, or maybe not since the assignment was so short. I filed for unemployment again, not knowing what else to do.

I think I got stabbed in the back by a project manager, but I'm sure no one will ever tell me. Other possibility is that they were greedy and charged way too much. I feel like such a pawn, I hate being a contractor but its all I can find.

21. That's so wrong.
It's not fair for employers to leave their employees second guessing themselves and going insane trying to find out why they were let go/fired. As I said in a previous post, is it THAT hard to just be CANDID with employees? It would save us SO much sanity. Even if the end result is still the same (jobless), at least you have SOME sanity left.

27. They don't have to care
I've learned over my many years in management that companies aren't in the buisness of caring. Their jobs are to benifit the owner or share-holders. I was directed on many occasions to take actions with staff that I personally found to be not only personally uncomfortable but at times just disgusting.

That's why I no longer choose to manage others.

34. thats why managers have no credibilty with me
they still act like you are expected to have some kind of loyalty to the company, just because they're helping you find work. But they don't care how you are treated- I was bullied by someone at a client site for 4 months after I started reporting it and they basically ignored me. All they care about is billing, billing, billing and if its not me it will be someone else.

35. I'm extremely cynical
In a perfect world HR should be your friend in these kinds of situations. Nothing could be further from the truth. HR professionals primary responsibility is to protect the company. One would think that would generally mean to work with the offending manager. I'm sure that occurs in many companies but the fall out always is on the line staff who is forever branded as a complainer in management's eyes. Hopefully there are policies in place to protect folks who "question authority". More often than not they are forced one way or another to find new jobs within three years.

Corporate America truly is the great Satan. I've seen many a good individual corrupt their personal values under the guise of "it's policy or it's just business". In our current culture most of us are slaves to our paycheck. It sucks.

39. Private/Local businesses aren't always saints, either
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 06:03 PM by GOPNotForMe
The job I was just fired from is a local store. The owners wear Labor Party shirts and claim to be super-liberal.

Then they pay their employees an unjustifiably low salary and fire them with no notice (which they would of course expect from their quitting employees).

I'm beginning to think I need to start my own business. Be my own boss. Screw the rest of 'em.

43. This is so true-- my bosses who I've worked for 8 out of the last 12 years
by the way, these bastards. Lied to me, saying they wre eliminating my job, when they actually fucking replaced me while I was on vacation!! A half hour before they canned me, I met the young woman repalacing me, so at least I was a little prepared. The new person has no experience and is probably making 1/2 the salary I was. So I understand they are cheap skates.. but shit!!! I have no clue why they had to lie about it. To preserve the illusion that they are not users and cheap bastards?
And these guys always would go on about how much loyalty means to them and if I ever need something or whatever ....all that sort of bullshit that actually added up to nothing.
Yikes, it's a rough business.

one night after being fired...I had a dream

an army of 50,000 clones of me marched into the city that I worked and burned down the complex in which I work!!!!

Then we marched in circles for hours around the city with torches along with red and gold flags, then burned it down. Then we built a bigger and better city, and hired everyone who wanted jobs....

Then I fired them for revenge. We began walking home, but were run down by an infinity of speeding trains!!!!:scared:
