How did "ROGER" become an accepted reply? Seriously! |
|
I know WILCO stands for WILL COMPLY, but where did ROGER come from? Any DU historians care to take a crack at this one?

In the WW2-era American Phonetic Alphabet, R was 'Roger' (since replaced by NATO Phonetic Alphabet's 'Romeo.') Means "message was recieved and understood--R for "Recieved." Roger Wilco is "Recieved, Will Comply."

3. I am guessing here, but |
|
if WILCO means "will comply", then ROGER may be the name equivalent to RR for "reply receipt" or similar. Name equivalent being the same as how the military has words to go with the letters of the alphabet to avoid confusion.
Seems like a logical guess, but I could be way, way off on this.

5. the current phonetic alphabet |
|
I know the current one if it's still the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...of the Viet Nam era, but I don't think I've ever seen the previous WW2 era one (Able, Baker, Charlie, etc.), and the police seem to have a completely different one - just curious, I'm a nerd...inquiring minds, etc.
Anybody got those?

I know the modern one from my USAF days, but I didn't even realize there was a previous version. http://www.486th.org/Photos/Letters/phonetic.htm

the radios on my ship were so bad I could never have understood them. There was one guy on board who had a severe speech impediment - where do you supose the navy put him? Ha ha, they made him a radioman, of course.

Which was popular during the brief CB radio craze in the '70s.
