8. I didn't know there was such a thing. BTW, I prefer electric |
|
blankets because you can turn them on before you hit the bed and get it toasty. Down comforters still mean you get into a cold bed. My cats proved also they prefer an electric blanket. They watch you turn that thing on and 4 cats are on that bed within 5 minutes.

It was one of the best things we have done. It has duel control, it gets the pillows warm and no need for heavy covers. We love ours!

6. Down comforter with a flannel duvet cover.. mmm nice and warm! |
|
Although my room is like the frigged north, the furnace is whacked and doesn't work back here, so I have a little oil heater, I turn that on an hour before bed so its nice and warm then snuggle into bed... Uh would it be wrong to crawl back into bed now? :P

7. Big fluffy down comforter on my bed... |

...two cats (one per set of feet), and a warm SO makes even Minnesota winters nice and cozy.
I though I heard that electric blankets may cause cancer? But it's probably an urban legend :dunce:

9. Once, a long time ago, I was wrapped up in my nice comfy warm |
|
electric blanket and lying in my hammock on a chilly morning (the landlords had the thermostat set at 60 and had a lock on it, too).
I heard this little sizzling noise and looked down the blankie to see a tiny blue electric flame working its way up the blanket along the pathway of one of the wires.
Do you know how hard it is to get out of a hammock when you are wrapped up in a blanket? Believe me, it is not easy. But I made it out of the hammock and the blanket in less than three seconds and pulled the plug.
I've never had any desire to use an electric blanket since then...

10. I don't trust electric blankets |
|
Even my sister in Alaska has given hers up. There are too many stories/theories that having electricity surrounding you is bad for your health. I know most has been disputed but it still doesn't seem worth whatever risk there is. I have a comforter that is of manmade fiber. We turn off the heat at night so it gets cold. It keeps me plenty warm.

12. The Danger Is Faulty Wiring In Old Or Damaged Blankets... |
|
... that could cause a fire. There's a difference between "stories" and actual studies. I don't know of any legitimate scientific studies that have demonstrated that being surrounded by electricity is bad for your health. Otherwise, we would need to move out of our homes due to having electric wires running through the walls, floors and ceilings.
I remember seeing (reading?) several years ago about some older electric blankets that had faulty thermostats and no in-line fuses that could be dangerous. Also, if someone stored it improperly, or had washed it in a machine that was too small that might have caused wire damage as well.
It's like any other electric appliance. Just use it carefully and responsibly. Take care of it and examine it to make certain that it's still in good shape. Whenever it needs cleaning, just take it to the dry cleaners or use one of the "jumbo" machines at the coin-laundry.
My current electric warming blanket has an automatic 10-hour shutoff in the thermostat controller. It prevents me from forgetting to turn it off in the morning when I get out of bed.
For my previous old-fashioned blanket, I used a 24-hour lamp-timer that would automatically cut the power to the blanket at 9 am... it would also automatically turn ON the blanket at 9 PM, so I could get into a pre-warmed bed. Can't do that with the digital thermostats now... you MUST press the "on" button to turn them on.

I use the electric blanket to warm the bed up before I get in. That way when I go to bed, the bed is nice and WARM! Then I turn off the blanket and the comforter keeps me warm and snug!

18. Cotton filled quilts for me. |
|
We once lived in a tiny house in Iowa - our bedroom was a porch. I would take a hair dryer, aim the heat between the sheets, and then jump in before the heat left for good. We were fine with several quilts until morning. Getting up was not fun!

this means I'm either normal or not alone in being odd. The thought of being covered by something electric ... all night ... while I sleep. *shiver*
I'd honestly prefer my 65 lb lap dog as a warming device. She's pretty effective, too!

Big fluffy down comforter with an electric blanket between it and the top sheet. I turn on the blanket about 15 minutes before I go to bed and turn it off after I get in and get warm. This is Maine, after all.
