"The Royal Tannenbaums" - why does this not get more acclaim? |
|
I never hear people talking about it, but it's one of the best movies ever. It deserves to be in the top 100 lists, IMO.
Incredible movie.
And now, after a couple years, I'm watching it again and just as impressed as I was before.

1. Good movies don't get acclaim. |
|
They would rather reward films like 'Titanic':puke:

That movie sucks. I almost walked out in the middle. I should have and asked for my money back too.

5. The movie sucked balls of steel |

It was TORTURE to watch it. I thought it must have been the most boring movie I EVER had the unfortunate chance to sit through.
Guess we're not from the same planet.

7. I'm one of those people |

who did like the film. The melancholic feel struck a chord with me, I guess. But, I also understand why people didn't like it. I also loved Lost in Translation, which is another film that people either seemed to love or hate. I like character driven movies rather than action filled movies. Both those films were character driven....

But I did think Lost in Translation dragged here and there.

I remember having to DRAG friends to the theatre to see it, and they all thanked me for it later. After that, it just kinda' fell off everybody's radar. Sadly, this is what often happens with decent films made for ADULTS, with decent casts, a decent screenplay, etc.
I too have it on DVD, and it loses nothing with repeated viewings. Now that you mention it, we're having a pot-luck style neighborhood dinner party tonight, and this is now a contender for viewing later this eve.
Thanx for the reminder!

11. royal tennenbaums was a film that i loved for the first half |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 07:42 PM by faithnotgreed
then it went completely hollywood cliche in the second half
so im left with well, mixed feelings about it. most esp the whole parts of royal going into family mode with the grandsons. so-called hilarity ensues. cue music. ugh.

12. If you like that movie |

Here's two more you'll love... Heaven's Gate and Howard the Duck.
You can pick them up at any video store. They're always on the shelf. NOBODY rents them.

18. Weak analogy if I ever saw one... |
|
Heaven's Gate and Howard the Duck had combined budgets of about 200 million bucks - in 70's/80's dollars. They were attempts at BLOCKBUSTERS, and they failed miserably.
Millions of children didn't line up on a Saturday morning to see "Royal" like they did with Spielberg's failure of a children's "crossover" film. Likewise for Heaven's Gate, people didn't line up for "Royal" expecting to see another "Godfather" or "Apocalypse Now".
RE: "They're always on the shelf. NOBODY rents them.". "Royal" has made it's money back, it's doing very well in DVD rentals/sales. esp. in overseas markets, and we're still talking about it on this very forum.
What's your fucking problem? Why have you got your knickers all tied up in a knot? What's next? A massive letter writing campaign against "The Shipping News"?

13. Amazingly mediocre movie--starts out like it might be something special... |
|
...turns into a formula movie. Gene Hackman is great, though.
As far as I'm concerned, it gets TOO much acclaim!

15. I always compare it to Rushmore |
|
which IMO was a much better movie. Tannenbaums wasn't bad, just not the director's best.

16. That movie was loosely based on some cousins |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 08:08 PM by ikojo
of a friend of mine...their last name is Tannenbaum and they are VERY, VERY wealthy. One of them was the roommate of one of the writers at one time, either in boarding school or college.
I think it came out on DVD via Criterion. I should think that is serious attention.
