I'm not sure if Goldie's counts as fast food since it is more of a sit down place. In any event, not one of either to be found in Iowa.

There's one in the Brunswick Square Mall in East Brunswick, but that's a bit of a drive from Hamilton. Or Bridgewater, for that matter.

There's still a a stand-alone Roy's on Route 9 in Pine Beach (Ocean County), and they recently renovated it also, so I guess they're in it for the long haul. "Best damn chicken in the state", as Aretha Franklin would say.

|
It's in Mt. Carmel, right on Route 32. They still have those little apple-cheese crisps in the aluminum pot that they heat up in the oven, or at least they did a couple of years ago when we stopped there. Still smells like Trigger's saddle blanket in the restaurant, too. Place was still there last week, when we were down visiting the family for Thanksgiving -- they've got a billboard, so I guess they're still in business, anyway!

Like a huge gymnasium filled with picnic tables, you'd get your pizza and pitcher of beer from a window. Kids could run around like maniacs. I was four, and found an abandoned hat on the floor there that said "Vietnam: My Dad is There" which I kept and wore often. It made my parents vaguely uncomfortable, because my dad was not there.
I don't actually remember the pizza at all. Didn't they have movies, too? Or was that the Ground Round?

22. I don't remember movies. |

But I do remember watching them make the pizza through a huge picture window. And big pitchers of root beer. It's where my dad used to take us for birthday suppers when I was a little girl.
The only thing I really remember about Ground Round is eating peanuts and dropping the shells on the floor.

49. too funny, I just googled this the other day...my Shakey's story- |
|
I was wondering if they still had them anywhere.
My brother and I used to watch them making the pizza's through that window. They did have movies to watch on a big screen in the front.
The picnic tables had wooden chairs that were square, and we were some of those kids that ran around like maniacs. My brother pushed by me on a lap around the tables once, and I went sailing straight into one of the corner of one of the chairs and smacked my head on it on the way down to the concrete floor.
My father was an intern at the time at the local hospital and he met me in the ER with my mother. He said I needed stitches and I asked him if it was gonna hurt.
"Yep" he answered. "Of course it is." And he proceded to put 5 stitches in the back of my head.
That was my first hospital visit, and it was also the first time I realized first hand that I would much rather hear the truth than a lie. Especially from the person I trusted the most.
Thanks, Dad :)

Wow, I thought I had made it up. It was close enough to our house that we would walk there for dinner sometimes. But not very often because we didn't eat out much.
I remember the movies, too. Laurel and Hardy and The Three Stooges. I was fascinated by the pizza window and the pitchers of beer.

59. Filipino feasts cooked by my old Filipino uncles |
|
Uncle Larry cooked for Pinoys that worked in the Asparagus Camps in the Stockton Delta. When there was a Christening or birthday or any celebration he and Uncle Sammi, Uncle Pete, Uncle Mariano, Uncle Florentino and the rest of the boys would prepare a feast. Chicken and Pork Adobo, a pickled goat tartare, Dinuaguan, Satonghan, Pancit, Lumpia, Potato salad, Macaroni salad, jello salad, steamed rice, batuka, bibinka, cake and ice cream, punch and tons of smiles. However, when Uncle Florentino started sharpening his asparagus cutters the party was winding down. Time to go so Uncles can get ready for work. Oh by the way, they were all in their sixties and seventies during my youth when all this went down. ooiy sst sst.

62. I prefer Ilocano food to modern day Tagolog food |
|
If you are adventorous try the dinuguan with steam rice and pancit with lumpia on the side. Order biko or sweet rice for dessert. If not try the bibingka or cascarone.

61. Depends on which part of the world I am thinking about but here goes: |
|
Kentucky: Kozy Korner Barbeque, but will accept other local types as substitutes
KRYSTALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tastee Treet Hamburgers and soft serve ice cream from Russellville, Kentucky (supposedly these also existed in Iowa and Nebraska does anyone remember them???????? sort of a variation of the loose meat sandwich, and BOY were they GOOD!!!!!!!!) Best damn soft serve I ever had in my life.
Steak sandwiches at the Smokehouse in Owensboro KY...college hangout
Boston/Cambridge: Thin crust, oily, floppy pizza. That little sub shop just off Mass AVe on the Law School side of the Harvard Campus..best pastrami subs, best peppersteak subs and best egg salad I ever had anywhere. (this was in the late '60 -early 70's but I wonder if THAT is still there) Bartley's Burger Cottage and the haystack of onion rings Legal Sea Foods the wonderful butterfly shrimp all the chinese restaurants had ..looked like big handlebar moustaches, and tasted like heaven.
Nashville:
KRYSTALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Satsuma for a turnip green plate and the wonderful Christmas buffet!!!! Opryland hotel's unbelievable Sunday brunch buffet Loveless Motel breakfast Vietti's chili Shoney's Candyland's stuffed tomatoes with chicken salad
Evansville: Jaya's Asian Specialties (Korean food to die for) Mulligatawny soup at the Merry Go Round cafe
If I ever leave Texas, I will miss Mexican food.

82. Agree about the pre-mad cow beef |
|
It was nice to be able to have a hamburger and not think twice about it. I also remember some nice meals at City Cafe in Nashville, they had lunch plates with lots of semi greasy vegetables that tasted good. I also miss pizza mixes that actually got whomped into some decent tasting pizzas. Alot cheaper than ordering them from round table.

I moved to Minnesota from Ohio and miss several things. One is the Outrageous Parfait from Steak N Shake. I also miss Bagel and Deli in Oxford (Miami of Ohio) They made a Greek bagel with cream cheese, feta cheese, red onions, olives, and cukes on a onion bagel and then steamed it until it was hot and chewy - oh god!

69. "Chicken Delight" - NY Metro Area |
|
They delivered chicken dinners back in the '60s in a fleet of white Mercury Comets. I still remember their radio jingle:
"Don't cook tonight - call Chicken Delight!"
My late mother used to work at the polls on Election Day, and she'd arrange for Chicken Delight to deliver dinners to us. That way, we didn't have to turn on the stove while she was not home.

71. Twinkies--is it true they stopped making them? Is it? |
|
Someone told me this terrible news!
But I do happen to see them in grocery stores (how old are THEY LOL).
It cannot be true. I simply will not give up my packaged sponge cake with creamy filling.

79. Capio, Clearly Canadian, proper pizza, real mexican food, kasha, pieroshki |
|
the list goes on and on and on... It seems like every place I live, I fall in love with some food or other, and never learn how to make it, and then I move. And then, there are the family recipes and methods that I can't duplicate.
There were a lot of vendor-shop foods from Kiev that I'd kill for (the Russian restaurants in this area are very upscale...) and I have yet to find a proper pizza margherita. And don't get me started on mexican food... (there's a shop here that uses fish sticks in the fish tacos. Fish Sticks. FISH STICKS!!!!)
And I kill beverages. Capio? That was me. Clearly Canadian was my fault, too. Josta? Hi again. I've killed coffee shops, tea shops, and a smoothie place. I tried to kill Coke, but that's going to take some work.
I now drink water. Tea. Coffee. (Brands are not to be revealed.) Barring world wide disaster, I should be okay, and so should you.

84. The Taco Bell Taco Light and Beefy Tostada! Also miss Taco Bueno in TX. |
|
Oh, man...that Taco "Light" wasn't low-cal; the "light" was because it was made from a deep-fried FLOUR tortilla instead of a corn taco shell, and it was sooooo good. Also miss the beefy tostada with sour cream and the one little olive ring on top as garnish....

Take a hamburger cut in in half and put it in a hotdog bun, smother it with chilli (special GCK chilli) top it with onions until no chilli shows and you are there. If you don't like that get the fat man special yum yum!
