Let's see, how have things gone today? First I took off work to supervise the repainting of my apartment and the painters didn't show.
Second, I told the girl that I've been madly in love with for the last five or six years that I couldn't bear to be platonic friends with her any longer, so yeah, she's out of my life and that was kind of like cutting off one of my arms or something. She's the only person I've ever met who I could contemplate a future with... fucking hell. She has "feelings" for me, and thinks that we'd probably end up together in the future, but is just not interested in things "now." Sigh.
And then to top things off, I get a call at midnight that my grandfather, who is travelling in China, has been put in the hospital in Shanghai with some unidentified heart ailment and I can't get through to anyone who speaks English. Fuck!

Twisted fuck that I am, I'm still mainly focused on the girl... My grandfather has been suffering from heart disease and diabetes for the last twenty-odd years (apparently, he doesn't take the advice of his kidney-specialist son, or doctor-to-be grandson very seriously) and has been in and out of hospitals, so I actually am fairly confident that he'll be alright... it's largely the feeling of helplessness and worry that he won't be allowed to travel that is bothering me and that is going to kill my poor mother...

4. Well, it wasn't *entirely* platonic |
|
we had a very complicated relationship in college--it just never quite turned into the romantic relationship I wanted it to be.

at this point it's kind of an all-or-nothing proposition from both of our points of view...

There are millions of others worth your consideration if this one doesn't cut it.
(to autorank: thanks for the welcome!)

it's a lot harder to convince my heart of that, though... I invested more energy in pursuit of this one than I care to think about, and she really does mean the world to me...

9. Well, I think the moral of the story is ditch the girl |
|
Life's too short. Plus, when you hook up with someone else, she might speed up her timetable and get more in touch with her "feelings" for you. Then you're calling the shots, after which she'll feel resentful...
But what the hell do I know about these things anyway...
My best to your grandpa. I was lucky to have two good ones (one of them was great, actually). Girls come and go, as opposed to a precious grandparent. I hope he gets home safe and sound.

13. You're right, of course |

and my grandfather, who has his foibles, has still been a really fantastic grandparent (he and my grandmother paid for me to go to high school and college, among other things.) I think he'll be ok--he's a pretty resilient guy--I just hope he can get in good enough condition to fly back to the US where he can be taken care of properly...

10. this could be a good thing-maybe she will realize what she's missing. |
|
you know, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all that.
i know you'll miss her, but let her miss you too. good luck.
and postitive thoughts for your grandfather.
