Who needs an iPod?
Seriously, who has time for it? Where and when would you use it? Is this something mainly for young people? If I have to ask, am I too old?

3. It's a cool toy
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:26 AM by fujiyama
Its main advantage is that it can store thousands of songs. Basically it has 5-20 gigs of storage space which is huge for an mp3 player. That and it's compact and relatively light.

That said, it's also expensive - atleast $250-$350+.

I bought a lesser brand name mp3 player. It has 5 gigs of space and works fine for my needs. That and it was $150 or so, a lot cheaper than an iPod. Granted it lacks some features like searching for the specific song and it's a bit bulkier.

4. I just read it can hold nearly 10,000 songs
which prompted my question - WHY? Of course, I guess there is an advantage to being able to find one of the 10,000 you want to listen to at the moment. I can't even imagine 10,000 songs I'd like to have on hand.

8. I NEED mine. I use it on my bus ride to school and on trips and...
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:57 AM by geekgrrl
When my office is noisey and I need to write. I use it to drown out undergrads talking on their cell phones as I walk through campus.

I don't think it is about being young- I am 27. I think it is about whether or not the person loves listening to music all the time and I am one of those people.

I forgot to mention I have 5000 songs on there AND use it as a back up Hard drive.

21. Right
as I said in my other post I listen to audiobooks on mine. But I have a 15Gig iPod and use it to backup my Apple Powerbook (laptop). I will more likely kill the iPod disk before the Powerbook, but still having your data on two disks is better than one.

and I love my iPod, because I love music. I cannot stress how great Paolo Conte sounds on it. I also use it in my car, which has a crapola sound system (my wife uses the good car that has the good sound system). An iPod makes a great flashlight too, as I discovered last night.

10. I'm almost 50 and plan on getting one.
My mailman downloads AAR to listen to while walking his route. Since I walk to work everyday I plan on doing the samething, plus, downloading Bartcop.com radio and listening to him while walking, plus music.

18. why all the hostility?
I am no fan of Apple, but you have to admit that the iPod has created an entirely new market. It isn't the end-all-be-all that some people make it out to be, but it is a good product. One thing that Apple does well is market research, ergonomic development, and quality control. It may even do those things so well that it hurts to company. Some of the IPods features I do not like but some I do. I am planning to go with one of the new Creative Zen "mini" units when I get some spending cash lined up (Damn college life!).

22. Lack of easily available features.
The iPod could easily have mic/line-in recording, ogg and flac support, gapless playback, etc.

They have the recording with separate add-ons, which I think is lame. It's an incredibly useful function, it should be on the original product. But by making a separate add-on to do it, they get top cash in on people who want it.

And ogg is especially important for me. Most of my music collection is in ogg format. Bugs me that Apple (and most other companies who make media players) would overlook people like me. Granted I'm probably a minority, but it's a simple feature.

Just bugs me a lot.

I'm waiting for the Rio Karma 2 to come out. That should meet my needs.

It will replace my old CD walkman which I used just about every single day. I don't think age has anything to do with it.
