Anyone notice a surge of interest in the Beatles? |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-21-03 08:21 AM by Must_B_Free
I think as a result of the war, people are turning to the thing they knew that lifted their spirits the last time we were in this situation - The Beatles. My colleagues at work are listening to the Beatles and talking about them.
Anyone else observing the same?
Maybe War really is over, or at least lacking success.

1. Re-release of 'Let It Be' |
|
The original version. Without the 'cleaning up' by Phil Spector.
The first thing he murdered, but at least it wasn't human.
"Let It Be Naked' comes out in November.

2. War is over, if you want it |
|
I know, its Lennon, not Beatles.
I haven't noticed a LAPSE in interest in the Beatles.
But I really don't pay attention to that shit. I am a fan of their work, always have been, but I listen to their entire albums religiously (Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Let It Be, The Beatles) but refuse to listen to crap greatest hits albums.
And I don't really pay attention to mainstream music trends. I try to avoid it.

3. I've lost my interest in those litigious bastards... |
|
This latest lawsuit against Apple Computer just shows how the real message of Apple Corps and the Beatles really is "All You Need Is Cash."
And remember, the only real "protest" song they ever wrote wasn't against war or tyranny... it was a bitchy whine against the "Taxman."
Give me Bob Dylan any day... while the Beatles were writing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" Dylan wrote this:
Masters of War by Bob Dylan
Come you masters of war You that build all the guns You that build the death planes You that build the big bombs You that hide behind walls You that hide behind desks I just want you to know I can see through your masks You that never done nothin' But build to destroy You play with my world Like it's your little toy You put a gun in my hand And you hide from my eyes And you turn and run farther When the fast bullets fly Like Judas of old You lie and deceive A world war can be won You want me to believe But I see through your eyes And I see through your brain Like I see through the water That runs down my drain You fasten the triggers For the others to fire Then you set back and watch When the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion As young people's blood Flows out of their bodies And is buried in the mud You've thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled Fear to bring children Into the world For threatening my baby Unborn and unnamed You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins How much do I know To talk out of turn You might say that I'm young You might say I'm unlearned But there's one thing I know Though I'm younger than you Even Jesus would never Forgive what you do Let me ask you one question Is your money that good Will it buy you forgiveness Do you think that it could I think you will find When your death takes its toll All the money you made Will never buy back your soul And I hope that you die And your death'll come soon I will follow your casket In the pale afternoon And I'll watch while you're lowered Down to your deathbed And I'll stand o'er your grave 'Til I'm sure that you're dead Copyright ©1963; renewed 1991 Special Rider Music

You know that "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" was one of their very first attempts at songwriting. To compare that to a great Bob Dylan song is stupid. Compare a great Beatles song to a great Dylan song and they are on par with eachother.

6. Bob was 22 when "Masters of War" came out in '63... |
|
...the Beatles were still a "boy band" at least until Rubber Soul came out in late '65. McCartney is only a year younger than Bob, while Lennon was a year older. So I think the comparison stands.
Harrison wrote "Taxman" -- I think the "Club For Growth" is going to adopt it as its theme song.

It's obvious that Harrison wrote that song cynically. The Beatles were a bunch of cynics. It's evident in many of their songs. Harrison would probably be significantly pissed off if it was used for something like Club For Growth.

5. When it comes to political and social statements |
|
I love Dylan. But for pop music, Beatles rule. John Lennon was an anti-war crusader whom we loved and cherished. Both he and Dylan were/are treasures.

9. Apple Records Had A Contract With Apple Computer |
|
Apple Records actually didn't see any problem with an Apple Computer until MP3's and the music sharing services came out. Apple Records approached Apple Computer and said, "Hey, we don't mind sharing the same name unless you get into the music biz. Would you mind not doing that?"
They signed a contract to that effect and everything was okay until Apple got into the music biz.
Apple Records will win this one.

10. Unless Steve Jobs BUYS Apple Records |
|
Which would depend on how many people are willing to pay $3000 for the G5, probably.
Who actually owns Apple records these days anyway? The label didn't really exist for about 20 years, then came back just in time for the Beatles Anthology CD releases. How much do Paul, Ringo, and the estates of John & George actually have to do with the company?

If you mean a groundswell, no.
If you mean by the media, yes.
