Open wide: dentists can use Tofu to fix teeth
The Independent
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
01 December 2004

Dentists could soon be stuffing patients' mouths with tofu following a study showing that soybean curd can help to regenerate the bone around wobbly teeth.

Scientists believe that a plastic-like material derived from soybean curd stimulates the growth of damaged bone, especially in people suffering from periodontal disease.

Laboratory tests suggest a new biomaterial made from soybean will prove to be better and cheaper than existing packing substances used to help the regeneration of damaged and diseased bone.

The Government's National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta) announced yesterday that it is confident enough in the idea to invest £149,000 in its further development.
