What greeting are you most likely to give while shopping this holiday season?

2. Happy Holidays
It's a good blanket term 'cause you don't want to be offending non-christians.

13. I like to say Happy New Year
Regardless of what someone celebrates, or doesn't celebrate, New Year's is nearly universal, at least in the US.

This post stems from an incident last xmas. My partner and I do not celebrate xmas, but at the last minute his father decided he wanted to join us for the holiday and insisted on giving us gifts. So guess who was tapped to go to the mall at 4 PM on xmas eve? Anyway, I was standing in line at Macy's and the person in front of me was evidently a hard-core "Merry Christmas" kind of person, because after the clerk rang up his gifts and said, "Thanks for shopping at Macy's, have a happy holiday," the customer went ballistic.

"Christmas," he said.

"What?"

"It's Christmas. Tomorrow is Christmas. As in CHRIST-mas,"

"Okay, whatever,"

"No, not 'whatever'. It's Christmas. As in Christ. You do know about Christ, don't you?"

Just then, the clerk (who looked like a tired, disaffected college-age kid) said, "You know what pal? It's Hannukah, Solstice, New Year's and Kwanzaa too. So whatever the hell you celebrate, make it a happy one, all right?"

15. I cross-posted to your thread
You know, I thought that angry CHRIST-mas dude was just a random idiot, but now I wonder. I usually say Happy New Year but now I want to start saying "Happy Holidays" just to see what kind of reaction I get. I live in a very red state, so this may be interesting...
