"I don't appreciate..."- is it overused? |
|
I'm starting to get annoyed by people saying things like "I don't appreciate it when..." or "I don't appreciate you doing such and such"...
Whatever happened to the good, old fashioned, "Your actions displease me!"?

I don't think I've ever actually heard anyone utter the phrase, "Your actions displease me."

8. I can picture Barbara Bush saying that. It's like "I am through with you." |
|
The line she used on Al Franken. What a Medusa.

5. Thank you for the unsolicited opinion |

Soemthing to that effect would be my response to "I don't appreciate..."
and that is if I were in a good mood.

7. Or how about, "Stop it you fucking asshole!" |
|
It's funny you should mention this because I'm a trucker and truckers are fond of saying , "I appreciate it," whenever somebody helps them out or does something nice for them. That saying never gets old to me, but I can see how a "I don't appreciate it," could get old.

12. See, "I appreciate that" is GREAT in my book... |
|
It's very positive...
But "I don't appreciate it when you...blah blah blah" just sounds...defensive and falsely polite.
Like when someone says "I'm sorry you're hurt" or "I'm sorry you're angry."

11. that is so southern and irritating |
|
Mostly the people who say that to me are about to get an earful anyway, so I manage to get an "this isn't about appreciation, this is about ______________ . . . " in there somewhere before they huff off in a snit.
The other one I HATE! "That wasn't helpful"
"Quit with the euphemisms you pathological liar!", I scream at the teevee, "The world does not exist to help you!"
My Fox News privileges were recently revoked by my partner -- he was worried the neighbors would call in a domestic disturbance, probably because they didn't appreciate all the noise coming from the den in my house. That wouldn't have been helpful.

14. It's telling someone how you don't feel |
|
instead of telling them how you do feel, i.e. "I resent you for..." "I'm angry/pissed off at you..." It's part of the bullshit politeness game we like to play in this culture and it's also a way of deflecting reality and living in our heads. I appreciate you for bringing this up.
