Good gourmet or micro brewed Beer suggestions needed?
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 04:10 PM by GingerSnaps
What's the name of a good Gourmet Beer or Micro brewed Beer? I have to take a couple of 6 packs of beer to class with me and I was thinking about Pumpkin Beer. Have you tried Pumpkin Beer? Good, bad or mediocre?

What is your favorite gourmet beer?

4. what is a gourmet beer
does it have to be flavored? I love beer, but I don't think I would like pumpkin beer. I guess Heineken is not gourmet enough for your class?

10. what is a "gourmet beer"
Am I right to assume "fancy label and an ingredient that shouldn't have been in there to start with". ?

11. My favorite is Chimay. Be warned. This is not like any American
beer you have ever had.

Originally brewed only for Christmas, Grande Réserve has become the best loved of the Chimay ales. It is a strong, dark beer with a touch of caramel and fresh yeast. Fruit aromas envelop the palate creating the flavour hailed around the world. Grande Réserve ages well for five years or longer becoming smoother and dryer as would a port. It is best when enjoyed at cellar temperature (50-54 degrees F) or lightly chilled.

28. We tried some Ale last night at the end of class
Dark brown Christmas ale which wasn't that bad. One of the Japanese students brought in some Sake :puke: which tasted like what I would think that rubbing alcohol would taste like. :puke:

12. Call me a Beer-facist if you must ..... but anything with
Fruit or Veg in the title isnt beer.

English Ales like "Old Speckled Hen" , "Bishops Finger" ...now THATS beer ( okay - technically its ale)

14. Gourmet Beer?
I do not think so...

We Beer Connoisseurs use many terms to define beer, but Gourmet is not one I would use. You could say micro brewed (kind of a misnomer), flavored beer, or perhaps specialty beer.

Any beer that is not Miller, Bud, Coors or other large American Company would be good. If you are looking for a flavored beer, I would go for a Belgian White Ale. It is flavored with oranges and a hint of spices (coriander). There are many brands to choose from and Blue Moon (oops Coors) is usually easy to find. Pumpkin Ales are a little different for the average beer drinker. I would not get any more than one sick pack of that.

Any other fruit beer or dark beer would also be a good idea. There are many options out there. For a dry beer go for a lambic or a wheat beer. Any fruit flavored beers are generally good, especially if you stick to berries and or cherries.

18. I like the Belgian-styled fruit beers or lambics....
I also like the European or Canadian style beers. This time of year, I'd go for a cranberry lambic if you can find it, or a wassail.

Best beer for the price. I live in Ohio now, so it's not readily available. But Great Lakes does the trick!

22. Chimay from Belgium
if you can find it. It comes in .75 liter bottles with a cork.

Its a lambic from Belgium, meaning it uses natural yeast and is unfiltered. great flavor, highly carbonated, and high in alcohol. the blue label is around 9%.

29. If you can tell us where you are, we can offer much better suggestions.
City? At the very least, what state are you in? Many small production microbrews (which can be outstanding) are only available in the immediate area, or at best regionally.

I know there are many microbrew fans on DU, so if you can give us an idea of where you are, we can offer great suggestions!
