please share your favorite creation myths here
I'm sick and tired of the 6-day, Adam's-rib myth and would like to hear some other stories. My knowledge of other culture's myths is not that great (because of my judeo-xtian upbringing) and I'd like to know more. I suspect the stoy in Genesis is just one of thousands.

2. I heard a Hopi creation story once
that God is the master baker and he baked up a man but it was underdone and that turned out to be the white man, so he baked up another man and it was overdone and that turned out to be the black man, and then he baked another man and it came out just right and that turned out to be the Hopi. That's always made me smile.

4. Norse mythology: It starts with a giant and a cow made from fire and ice
and then gets more interesting. Check it out.

7. Here's my favourite
All universes emanate from the pores of Karanodakashayi Maha-Vishnu, who lies down in the Causal Ocean.

Vishnu enters each individual universe as Garbodakashayi Maha-Vishnu, and from His navel grows a lotus flower. In that lotus flower is born Brahmaji, the first living being in the universe.

At first Brahmaji does not know who he is, or what to do. He climbs down the stem of his lotus flower, right to the bottom, but still cannot work out his situation.

He climbs back up and sits in his lotus. Then the Lord initiates him into the chanting of the gayatri mantra, and Brahmaji understands how to create. Brahmaji creates the universe; the planets, the oceans, rivers and continents; all the plants and animals and human beings.

Then the Lord glances over the material creation, and by His glance the individual jivas (souls) are injected into all their bodies; humans, animals, fish, plants, trees and creepers. The Lord also dwells in each of their hearts alongside them as Kshirodakasayi Maha-Vishnu, the Supersoul.

Hows that?

11. This probably isn't the correct spot
But what I find most telling about creation stories is that the only one in which the female is the villian (or conspires with the villian) is the Christian story.

Of course, my personal feeling is that was done on purpose -- to further dispel the Earth religions which saw women as at least equal to, if not above, man.
