Name a movie everyone seemed to love except you
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 04:32 PM by da_chimperor
For me: The Lord of The Rings trilogy. It's not that I didn't like the movies, I just didn't love them. I thought they were all pretty good, but my friends all think I'm crazy. They were borderline orgasmic after watching each one. I was more interested in the graphics than anything else.

I guess it's because I'm occasionally retarded when it comes to good movies. Sure, Dances With Wolves is my favorite, but I also liked Waterworld quite a bit . . . you know, the total flop with Kevin Costner? :D Yeah, that one.

Almost got beaten after Schindler's List
I saw Schindler's List with a friend of mine who had a real sick sense of humor. As we're walking out, in a loud voice he said, "Wouldn't it be awful if something like that really happened?" Of course, we got challenged, and my friend announced he was Jewish (which was true) and was about to prove it when management threw him out (I blended in with the crowd, too mortified to let people think I knew him).

182. You know, I always refused to see Schindler's List
because:
1. It's by Steven Spielberg, and I hated every other saccharine, manipulative, baseball-bat-upside-the-head thing he's ever done.
2. I saw previews and people were speaking English with Hogan's Heros quality German accents. What the hell was that?

211. Oh, Yes -- Moulin Rouge!
I cannot understand why it was so highly regarded.

The dialogue was uninspired. The plot was melodramatic. The modern pop just didn't fit at all with the Paris of 100 years ago -- it was a really silly combination. It was one case in which the right soundtrack might have rescued the movie.

It was quite good visually, but that's true of a lot of bad movies.

92. gotta 2nd this, but only because everyone talked about the twist at the
end... So I watched the entire lame ass thing and I knew by the middle of it what was going on. Not only that I thought it was sooo obvious that I thought everyone else watching it knew it as well so near the end I say aloud "boy they're gonna have to do some serious backtracking in order to prove that that it wasnt all just in his mind". Two guys who had seen it got so pissed at me for "giving it away"...blah

156. ditto: isnt crazy how they hype these twists that aren't really. I mean
writers purposely lay out foreshadowing so you can think big on yourself when youre proven right, or think the script was well written because you didn't!!..and I am in no way any kind of intellectual, in fact I am one of the dorkiest people I know. Yet people way smarter and more with it than me fall for this kinda crap. go figure.

23. I'll second your LOTR
Those movies took themselves way too seriously. There was some humor in the books but not in Peter Jackson's version. They face 10 orcs, 100 orcs, 1000 orcs and always get through -- boringly predictable and repetitive.

On the flip side I saw and loved "Ray" and now read the reviews which seem to dismiss it.

63. Was Titanic STOOPID or what?
I was slackjaw with amazement at how absolutely horrendous it was.

The characters were laughably contrived -- the designer of the boat saying, "Little Kate, I am so sorry I didn't build a better boat for you...." The scene where the rich young aristocrat has the time of her life among the salt-o' the earth peasants, who are also uplifted by her presence. And the know-it-all Leonardo DiCaprio character, a boring little artist who was supposedly expert in everything from sex to what to do when the ocean line you are on begins to sink....

The song at the end is good though

89. Kinda like dreams?
Dreams can be fun, can be wildly imaginative, and seem meaningful, but still be hard to explain to someone else, or to say what it "meant", yes?

Its called "multivalency."

Then again, I am an artist, background in paleontology, and know how to read the language of images, in which Kubrick was one of the Great Masters, and the sort of ideas he was referencing.

Not all art is easily accessible. Some requires careful study. Not all film artists spoonfeed their audiences, or have a point that they wish to hammer in. Some films demand more from their audience to be understtod

I could talk for hours about why 2001 is a breathtaking masterpiece of film art....

But in my opinion 2001 is the best Sci-Fi movie ever and one of the greatest films ever period. I understand why some don't like it but please don't make fun of people who understand the symbolism. Even if Kubrick did say something along those lines I can't imagine that Arthur C. Clarke would agree.

I also am aware of the crimes against Native Americans -- which has nothing to do with why I didn't like this movie.

I objected to the stereotypes -- all whites but Costner are psychotic killers; all Indians are pure Noble Savages, but still, not noble enough to have a story of their own, but must have a white man and a white woman, albeit raised by NAs, as the main characters. I guess what bugs me about movies about "natives" that MUST have white characters to tell their stories is that it continues their marginalization in our society; can't even have a movie or a story about Native Americans without the white man pissing all over it to mark it as his territory.

(It's a pet peeve, as you see.)

I know I am in the minority. I know of one other person who hated it.

I even hated the Lion King (cartoon)

I kept wondering how Stands-with-a-Fist managed to use a blow dryer in her tepee in the nineteenth century.

99. I think it's more fair to say ...
that I was let down by how much it had been built up for me. As a huge fan of fantasy I had great expectations even before eveyone started telling me I HAD to see it. I don't hate it by any means and I do get some laughs out of it. It's just a lot of the jokes don't quite work for me...It may be that I'm too familiar with the material and influences. When I saw the topic this seemed like the obvious film for me.

164. Hooorah!
I also detest the Star Wars trilogy and the new ones. Though I guess to be fair I've only seen the first of the new ones, though have suffered immensely through several viewings of the originals.

It drives me insane when people drone on about them, which is a habit of ALL my friends, who are usually rational and reasonable folk that turn completely incapable of normal criticism whenever the subject is brought up, particularly when they were re-released. I really WANT to be in the cult that adores them, but I just can't see anything good about them at all: really bad acting, really bad writing, special effects that look like a four year old did them up (and yes I KNOW they were WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME, but that doesn't mean they look anything but silly), and just the most predictable and silly story of all time.

*Sigh. I suppose they aren't going anywhere.

114. most any movie made from about 1971 onward
im just not into the commercial stuff at all. no point in listing them because its most all movies from the past 30 yrs. all the incredible violence that started at that point may be the reason for the time warp. but i find most things to be either manipulative or contrived. and of course incredibly cliched.

one recent movie i loved was babe. from 1995. i was shocked it did so well but it is a fantastic movie.

i love old movies and offbeat recent ones like the castle or clockwatchers.

That movie was remarkable, risky, fresh and amazingly worked for many sincere people. That movie truly broke new ground, while most just follow the tired path, ripping off what they can.

I thought this was one of the best of the year. Hardly pretentious.

And Shawshank Redemption. This same friend absolutely loves that movie, too, and I have to admit I liked it, but it's not one of those I could watch over and over again.

Hero is another one. A friend I went with raved about it for days, but it failed "the wristwatch test"--I must've looked at my watch a half-dozen times wondering, "How much longer am I gonna have to sit here?"

I can't believe that asshole Cameron made a big deal about how "accurate and realistic" the movie was. It was complete nonsense. plus, even though I remember the folk song era, I found A Mighty Wind to be far less funny than either Best in Show or Waiting for Guffman, both of which I thought were absolutely hilarious.

In fact, I saw it with a group of people who were my age or older, and we ALL thought A Mighty Win wasn't very funny. It wasn't offensive, just not funny.
