"Big Unit" to the Yankees?
The Yankees have really cornered the market on signing past-their-prime players, haven't they? I'm so glad the Red Sox kicked their ass.

I thought they learned to stop playing fantasy baseball after Phillips

The need t o build a core or young talent before going after the big free agents

6. You mean MONEYBALL!!! *gasp*
It actually makes a lot of sense, but baseball people don't like it because it's a way of thinking that they just aren't able to follow. So, not unlike the political strategy of the conservatives and the Republicans, they set out not to disprove it, but to make it simply unacceptable.

7. But didn't the A's just trade for Kendall from Pittsburgh?
He's got a big salary. I'm glad they did it.

8. And almost a .400 on base %
Just what the A's look for. But don't forget. The A's got lucky getting three exceptional pitchers through their farm system. And they have won nothing and now are looking to unload a pitcher or two. I'm not convinced Moneyball means anything.

12. Was it really 'lucky', though?
Moneyball isn't all about OBP, it's about finding those overrated and underrated aspects of a player, and taking advantage of them. They got Barry Zito because nobody thought he threw hard enough, and neither Hudson or Mulder were considered 'top' prospects out of college. They've also developed Rich Harden, who appears to be a top-class prospect too, so it's hard to say that their success is simply down to 'luck'.

14. The A's farm system has always been top-notch
I enjoy watching the River Cats and seeing these kids getting promoted. They are much hungrier than the overpaid players. Sometimes, when they play day games during the week, I take my binoculars and watch them from my boss' office.

10. Yeah, part of if will be paid by the Pirates, but their payroll will not
top 57 mil. Compare that to the Yankees and other big money teams. Spending a lot of money, always, doesn't gaurantee a winner.

4. The "new look" Yankees are like the "old look" Red Sox
Remember it was the Sox who signed the Marichal's and Seaver's?

9. And Jim Rice belongs in the HOF
Played 15 years and was excellent in 12 of those years. That's enough for me.

11. Hey, getting A-Rod was a big deal, and it didn't seem to help them...
...I really think he was a detriment to the team. His little sissy-girl slap kinda sums up his attitude, and if he hadn't done that, the Yankees might have won that game.

Then again, probably not, the baseball Gods were with the Sox this year.
