5. How Do They Know Cause and Effect? |
|
One interpretation could be that personalities inclined toward psychosis are more attracted towards pot. They have to be able to determine in advance who is likely to become psychotic.
And apparently they do claim this:
On average, the study found that young people using cannabis have about a 6 percent increased risk of developing psychotic symptoms, compared with non-users. Among those vulnerable to the condition, the risk jumps to 23.8 percent.
The article just doesn't say how.

9. The study could not show C-and-E. |
|
It shows an association between earlier pot use and later psychosis. Confounding factors could have produced a spurious association -- e.g., factors that make earlier pot use more likely also make later psychosis more likely. Such a study is useful for highlighting possible risks, not for establishing them.

19. I Agree -- Howard will Tank without Robin |

The authors of the study certainly know that, but the public presentation of the results tends to imply cause and effect.

6. And schizophrenia is associated with alcohol and tobacco use |
|
It has to do with poor impulse control and self-medication. Which came first - the psychosis or the marijuana use?

That's the mantra everyone should repeat to themselves 10 times when reading any health related story.
"Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation" "Correlation does not equal causation"
