Name a wine everybody seemed to love but you... |
|
For me, the biggest letdown was Caymus Conundrum (now just Conundrum following the death of Charlie Wagner).
Went to a dinner where everybody was absolutely raving about this wine. I was unable to drink it at that time (had the flu really bad), so I bought 2 bottles the next day.
What a letdown. I think I had such high expectations of the wine, that when I finally did taste it, it didn't measure up, further enhancing my dissapoinment.
What was your biggest letdown wine?

It tastes like heavy Chianti with a couple of shots of dishwater.
Like the guy in Sideways: "I am NOT DRINKING MERLOT!!!!!"

I just don't "get" wine.. It tastes just like what it is, old, spoiled grape juice. I do cook with it, but mainly because the taste gets cooked out.

15. I don't know specific names |

But I've tried pretty much every type.. They all make me gag. One glass of red wine gives me a 4 hour hangover the next morning. Maybe I'm allergic to it?
I've had some sweet wines that taste okay, but I'd still rather drink unfermented grape juice.

It's the specific wine. Which winery or winemaker, what variety, how old is it (too young, too harsh; too old, flat or spoiled.)
Every type of wine I've ever had, I've had crap and I've had great stuff. The difference is vast.
Here in Northern Cal you can get great wines for around $12 a bottle. You can also find wines that I just don't like for much more than that. We're spoiled, though; we have lots to choose from, and many of the wineries will let you try 5-6 wines for a nominal fee (some even for free, though fewer these days now that Napa winetasting has turned into a rolling party for tourists).

The Cab was utterly undrinkable, even at $2.99 a bottle (I'm in the midwest).
The Sauvignon Blanc was OK when it was nearly freezing and I could just gulp it down and dull the effects of spending the weekend with my grandparents.

Zinfandel should be red and dry. White Zin is soda pop not wine. :puke:

21. Some of those Napa cult cabs & bordeaux blends are VERY overrated. |
|
Some aren't--some are great. But some bring to mind the fable about the emperor's new clothes.
There are also some absolute gems that put anything from Rutherford to shame. The Alexander Valley is producing some knockout cabs, and the zins coming out of the hot/dry areas of Sonoma and Mendocino County are fantastically big and bold.
My current favorites are a couple from Geyser Peak's block collection--their Sandy Lane Vineyard Zin, and the Kumuleis Vineyard Cab are both outstanding, and both in the $30-40 range.
Fetzer--yes, big, mass-produced Fetzer--makes some unbelievably great limited production wines (most that you can only get locally or directly at the winery). They do their own Rutherford cab (retail is around $45) that'll stand up to any of the cult cabs from Napa, and they've got a dry-farmed zin from Mendocino County under their Mariah label that's quite good, too.
