And that he has nothing to do with Christmas . In fact he was probably not born on December 25 at all .

16. I always heard it was he was born in the spring
because the shepherds wouldn't have been out at night with their flocks except in spring when lambs were being born. No clue how true that is though.

21. JESUS' REAL BIRTHDAY
Most biblical scholars and preachers readily admit that they know Christ was not born on December 25th. However, they claim that this day is as good as any other to celebrate the birth of Jesus, despite the fact that it was originally a pagan celebration called Saturnalia which commemorated the birth of the sun god.

<snip>

Since John was born on Passover, the 15th day of Nisan (the 1st Jewish month), Jesus would have been born six months later on the 15th day of Tishri (the 7th Jewish month). The 15th day of the 7th month begins the Feast of Tabernacles (Lev. 23:34-35), also known as Sukkot. Jesus was born on the 1st day of the Feast of Tabernacles! In the year 5 B.C.E., this fell in the month of September.

<more> http://users.aristotle.net/~bhuie/birthday.htm

It was moved to December because sales were slow at that time of the year. There was little motivation for anyone to drag the horse out of the barn and head down to the local town center. Their stocks were full since they had just completed the harvest and only dry goods would have been needed through the winter. So, move a major religious holiday around to get the folks out to the stores during the slow period.

I say send her these passages highlighted in a bible and see if she figures it out on her own.

38. You're right on the first point; utter bullshit on the second
Jesus' birthdate was established 1600 or so years ago (plus or minus a century).

The idea of buying shit for Christmas to give people didn't start until the 1800s. So buying stuff had nothing to do with setting Jesus' birthday. What it had to do with was the Christians wanted to convert people, and part of the method was to take pagan holidays and Christianize them (like Saturnalia to Christmas; or that celtic holiday (Samhain? Damn, can't remember) to Halloween; and many of the saints, and on and on and on).

But don't be passing around bogus stuff that it was about holiday shopping.

43. Perhaps I should have said
the continued reason for the season. That is, MHO.

speaking of dec 25, the romans had their big hedonistic feast to worship saturn during this time as well. Saturnalia ran from dec 17-24. all the roman ppl would get together for big festive meals and exchange good-luck presents. there were even parades in the streets. but at the end of that week, on dec 25 (winter solstice) was the BIG day, "Sol Invicticus" or "the birthday of the sun," which celebrated the rebirth of the sun into a new year.

18. This reminds me of a funny story
We had these kids up the street who were younger than me. The middle girl grew up to be a fundy and would send Xmas cards to my parents. Well, her handwriting was never all that great, so one year, as usual, she signed, "In Christ," before their names.

My dad, a big goofy Swedish guy, takes one look at the card, and says, "'I'M THIRSTY???' Why the hell did she sign the card like that?" :D

I still giggle when I think of it.

28. The Jesus was a liberal, I hate to break to you....
I think the RW bible thumpers already put a spin to that. I was watching Good Morning America and the question was asked how can the church exclude people when Jesus never did. Well the RW Southern Baptist bible thumper minister replied: Yes, Jesus did accept everybody, but only if you are willing to release your sins. If you didn't then Jesus has no problem casting you out of his flock. He used some biblical reference I never heard as proof of Jesus rejecting a person because the person did not want to release their sin.

In short, I guess we are all going to hell. See you there soon my friend.

39. Yeah, that 'God's Love' blather always slays me
He's pretty fickle that god.

"Either love me or suffer eternal torment. See, I love you so much I created a human version of myself and then had myself crucified to absolve you of your sins (provided of course you vow to love me forever). Oh, and one more thing, stop with the bestiality"

So I'm plagiarizing this for my card this year...

Not his followers. So nobody on earth has any way of knowing the condition of anybody's soul, since sin and salvation is between the individual and Jesus.

If one is inclined to believe in Jesus at all.

45. SO not true.
The fundies really bother me.
When Jesus healed the lepers, he didn't say "You better all be perfect now and never do anything wrong again!"
All Jesus asked was that people had faith (in him/God), if I recall correctly. While he did tell one person to "go and sin no more", he didn't require this when healing/accepting/loving someone.

The fundies would really hate him if he came back today I think. Hanging out with thieves, prostitutes, and tax collectors...oh no.

And explain to her that the constant bringing up of Jebus' birthday is a slap in the face to Joseph, who had to live with the SHAME of knowing that he didn't father the child.

30. Could be worse
My sister became a Jehovah's Witness. We sent her a Christmas card, and we got back a long and impolite rant about how we should have known that JWs don't do cards, with a couple gratuitous digs on the topic of how someone as apostate as myself had no business dealing with religious symbolism anyway.

Tried it again, with the most blandly non-denominational card we could find, and got a rant about how the eggs and flowers were evil pagan symbols. Eating a good breakfast imperils your immortal soul?

Your friends in Jeebus-- uh, Yahweh-- er, Mithras-- oops, how about Eno?
