2. Awesome film
first saw it about 3 years ago and must have watched it half-a-dozen times by now.

Zhang Yimou, the director, is in my opinion the finest director working today.

5. Sorta hated it.

but then- crouching tiger/hidden dragon annoyed me too. particularly the "flying" scenes.

however- I will say that Hero is better than c.t/h.d., and it is very pretty to look at...if it's an option for you, you might want to try to see it with a head full of acid.

9. Kind of boring.
It's one of those movies where you can't figure out if you like it or not.

But if you like bright colors and moving objects, you'll enjoy it.

12. Not at all. I calls em like I sees em.
There's this one protracted scene in Hero where to sword fighters are bouncing off a lake in slow motion while playing ping-pong with a drop of water. It was supposed to be profound. It was one of the few times in my amateur career of a movie goer where I started looking around the theater wondering if there isn't something more interesting I could be watching.

Let me know what you think, though.

10. Awesome.
One of the best wu xia movies ever made.

But then again I'm a raging Zhang Ziyi fangirl so you probably shouldn't take my word for it. :)

14. There's a big debate in China over whether it's pro-gov't propaganda
and I'm inclined toward the argument that it is.

The last title card is the best evidence that the movie is an argument that eradicating difference, and killing a lot of people is worth it if the result is one big, powerful country.

I also don't think this movie is that good even without the argument about politics.

Compare it to Crouching Tiger which is an incredibly sophisticated movie making arguments about gender and class and the weight of tradition, which has an incredibly heartbreaking and ambiguous conclusion about the issues it raises.

I'd rather watch Crouching Tiger ten more times than watch Hero once.
