One More Time: Anyone up for an Anime/Japanese Pop Culture group?
The last time I started up a thread like this, Verizon decided to screw with my phone lines and I couldn't get on any of the Internets for about four days. So I'm going to ask again if anyone is interested in such a group.

The mission statement would be something along the lines of promoting discussion of anime, manga, film, music and other aspects of Japanese pop culture (fashion trends, etc). We could also talk about Pocky, snack food of the Gods. :)

Anyone in? Remember we need 10 starred members to get it going.

2. Food talk would be welcome too.
I'm a bit of a budding foodie myself. :)

3. I'll join your quorum, but I don't have a lot of faith
The other discussion groups I've signed up for haven't exactly been a rousing success. It seems as though "interests" alone don't make for much discussion.

That said, does anyone know why http://www.japanesestreets.com never had a November update of their street fashion photo section? It's been really bumming me out.

4. Whee someone else who loves that site
I used to go there looking for EGL photos but haven't been there in quite a while.

I agree that some groups are better than others, but I really just want a spot where I don't have to constantly explain who the guy in my avatar is, or at least less often than I normally do. :P

5. On behalf of my daughter MiniAmandaRuth,
I will most enthusiastically say yes. She is anime crazy (and loves Pocky too), and would love to participate. Her favorite anime is Cowboy Bebop, Yu yu Hakusho, G Gundam, and Card Captor Sakura (Japanese version only). And Sailor Moon, of course. I know nothing about this stuff, I had to call her out here to get the names. I do love the opening to Cowboy Bebop.

AmandaRuth, the elder.

6. Anime would be cool...I'm a fan, even though I'm 19
It's like a bad habit that you don't want to get rid of...Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Lupin III...

And I know fans in their 40s. You're never too old to watch cartoons. ;)

As my favorite T-shirt says, "Anime: Because crack is cheaper." :P

11. LOL!
I don't do the CCG thing anymore (I'm a recovering Magic addict), but I know a lot of YGO fiends. They have tourneys at my local dork store all the time.

Hell, there's a Meowth water bottle sitting on top of my TV, and I'm a grown ass woman. I don't have a leg to stand on. :P

Funny story: a buddy of mine is a cop in his 30s. He keeps a pokeball on the dashboard of his squad car. One time some perp was in the back trying to be a smart ass, and said, "oh what are you gonna do, sic Pikachu on me?"

My friend? "What are you, STUPID?! Pikachu never goes in the ball!" :silly:

"I summon Dark Magician to the field, sacrificing my Big Shield Gardna and my Kuriboh! Dark Magic Attack!"

"Now I shall activate the Magic Card Shrink! It cuts your monster's attack points in half!"

"You only have one more turn, fool, before the Winged Dragon of Ra casts you into the shadows!"

EDIT: Not even electronic card games? Boy, are you missing out. :P

It's a wonder they can hear each other over the J-Pop blasting over the store stereo, though. ;)

15. You mean that weird music
that has only words that the Japanese like the sound of?

It's like Dave Barry's experiences in Japan: he saw a girl wearing a shirt that said, "King Fucker Chicken."

17. Hee!
I think it's karmic revenge for all those Americans with cheesy "Asian" characters as tattoos because they "look cool" but have no clue what they actually mean. Britney Spears got a kanji tattoo that supposedly meant "unique" when in actuality it just meant "strange". :P

My friend and I want to make ourselves millionaires by selling shirts with "stupid gaijin" on them.

19. Yeah? Go for it!
You'd make millions.

"Look, Dad, I got a tattoo! It means 'knowledge' in Japanese!"

"Do you speak Japanese?"

"No."

"Do you read Japanese?"

"Uh, no."

"Then how the hell do you know it don't say 'Spicy Tuna Roll'?"

23. Yep
I think Americans have forgotten how to make a good horror film. The only decent ones that have come out lately have all been remakes of better Japanese films.

I *heart* Godzilla. :D

29. Although I don't have a star next to my name, ...
I approve of there being an anime/j-culture group.

My recent favorites are Samurai Champloo and Planetes. I think DU'ers would like Planetes in particular, because it's a politically conscious series. It's a shame that both of these series are licensed, though. This means you won't find them on the mainstream BitTorrent sites.

:(

They're both highly recommended though.

30. Sure
Just ordered some Christmas gifts online: Lupin III, Fay Valentine and Julia action figures. Those are for two of my sons. Another son likes Ranma 1/2, and my stepdaughter likes Neon Genesis Evangelion. The mom (me) likes Rurouni Kenshin. LOL.
