Poll question: What do you say we drop siglines forever?
Really, if you have something to say just say it. Clearly we've grown beyond what a reasonable amount of server horsepower and network bandwidth can handle effectively, and frankly on the rare occasion that siglines and especially sig images do reappear, they are pretty damn annoying since they make the pages bounce around as each overtaxed server coughs up another instance of my_cat_is_one_precious_motherfuck_and_dont_you_ever_forget_it.j peg.

I say kill em, kill em dead. They served no real purpose anyway. We're all here, we all agree (mostly), if you've got a point to make, start a thread and make it.

4. Yeah, I was JUST thinking about that purple hippo
There are some amusing things they add, but as a whole, in my never humble opinion, they just eat up server resources and drag the whole place down.

If matcom really loves his purple hippo, he can paste it into the end of his threads.

Yes, I know I'll be the one wearing the bucket of coleslaw at our next Boston gathering :hurts:

2. Just get rid of pics in sig lines
they do make threads too long to load. We don't need them. Especially when rude people have very large or several large pics. I feel sorry for people using dial-up when people have pics in their sig line.

7. I thought about making that an option
but the server has to look for siglines regardless of what they contain in order to post them. Rarely are sig images hosted on DU servers, yet in order to display the link, the same amount of DU resources are required.

14. That's because people don't understand how the browsers work
Once an image is in one's browser cache, it doesn't get downloaded again. So even dialup people, clicking on a thread in which, say, RBNYC has posted 11,000 times with that image of the cute baby and cute cat &tc., the page will still load quickly, because the image need only be downloaded once.

For some reason, people use the Internet without understanding how it works.

15. That would make sense if
only a few people had pics in their sigline and we didn't get new people joining daily or chaning their pics regularly. Such is not the case, so it does take time to load.

OMG!!

Must be nursing, eh? Who's to say the baby doesn't want a martini? Did Mr. Smartypants doctor think of that? I bet not. Hmmph. And I don't even have a degree.

:-)

:hi: to you!

20. Right. But beer is good for milk production.
Can only have 1 per day 3 days a week tho. I never used to like beer, but now I do. Been drinking Yeungling.

24. There is an option not to display images
For people who are on dial-up. I think people should read have to read through those before they can start posting here... you can hide avatars and other images...

9. A better idea - keep the siglines, eliminate message text
Like you say, if you have something to say, then just say it - but say it in the sigline. Everyone would be forced to make their point within the confines of the sigline, and then repeatedly post just that in whatever thread one feels the need to make that point.

It's efficient, it's helpful to the dialup people (once the siglines are in their cache, they won't be downloading anyhting!) and easier on the DU servers.

11. A compromise
Keep sig lines but limit the size of pics. I'm guilty of having several pics in my sig, but I tried to keep them relatively small in both screen size and file size. I only have more than one because I'm too bloody indecisive to pick just one.

19. Small avatar size graphics are OK in sig lines
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 09:34 PM by RC
But a few get carried away.

Someone even has a big picture of bu$h. WTF is with that? This is a liberal web site, Why advertise for that other place?

Posts cluttered with big pictures screams "Look at me, immature male here."

Let's have some compassion for the dial-uppers. So say nothing about saving wear and tear on everyone's mouse wheel to scroll past the many, many redundant graphics cluttered posts.

21. You're not getting it
The server has to dig up each poster's sig line data in order to post them, they are separate from the post itself. It's not a matter of image size, it's not a matter of number of images, it's really not a matter of how much text is in them, it's whether the server has to look them up for view per post per user or not.

22. Yeah, I get it.
Server time is minimal. The servers are designed for this.
The server has to dig up each individual post in a thread each time someone clicks on that thread also.
To say nothing of all the house keeping for "My Posts" and searches, etc.

23. Not only each individual post
but the sig lines are not written into the post content, which is why you can make a post once, change your sig text, and go back to that post and the post will reflect the change. It's a fresh select each and every time.

31. I think it would be more efficient to drop sig images and instead
allow much larger avatar images. That way everyone gets one, and with a high enough resolution to show cats or parrots or favorite sky scenes or themselves - like most other messageboards out there.
