PLAYAS, N.M. (AP) Dec. 3, 2004 — The war on terrorism has given an abandoned mining town a new lease on life.
Playas (PLY'-uhs), New Mexico, is now the home of an anti-terrorist training center, just opened by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
Today, the town is swarming with firefighters, E-M-T's and police officers, surrounding a make-believe enclave for suicide bombers.
The town had sat empty for months after the mining company that built it packed up and moved out.
New Mexico Tech bought the whole town from Phelps Dodge Corporation for five (m) million dollars after getting the go-ahead from the U-S Department of Homeland Security.
