'Master/slave' Most Politically Incorrect Phrase
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The computer term "master/slave," which was banned as racially offensive by a Los Angeles County purchasing department, was named the most politically incorrect term of the year on Thursday.

Among other terms on the top 10 list of politically charged words and phrases, issued by the word usage group Global Language Monitor, were "non-same sex marriage" to describe heterosexual unions, "waitron" for waiter or waitress and "higher being" for God, a term some people found too religious.

"We found 'master/slave' to be the most egregious example of political correctness in 2004," said Paul JJ Payack, president of The Global Language Monitor.

"This is but one more example of the insertion of politics into every facet of modern life, down to the level of the control processes of computer technology."

2. master/slave deemed racist now?
It's been in use in the industry for years. Do they even know what it means in this context?

What's next? Hardware/hard drive for their blatant military/sexual overtones?

5. jesus christ. what the fuck?
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 09:50 AM by enki23
there were no fucking street marches and campus demonstrations against "master and slave" IDE setups. one fucking purchasing department decided they didn't like the terminology, and went for something else, because it reminded them of something nasty.

so this one incident is "the most egregious example of political correctness?" that's a lot of power for one department in one city. fucking wow. just, fucking, wow.

how about "homicide bombers?" that one was started by the fucking WHITE HOUSE, and picked up by the worst of the rightwing nutcase media. can you get a more pure example of "political correctness" than that? the president is, after all, a fucking politician. and the choice of "homicide bombers" was pure politics. did that one even make their fucking list?

but some purchasing department somewhere in LA didn't like "master/slave" settings terminology. perhaps because a number of them were black, and it made them feel a bit uncomfortable. it may have been a bit silly, but it's a pretty damned obscure example.

and does anyone out there truly have strong feelings about retaining "master/slave" for IDE devices? what, do they have fond memories of great grandpappy changing the fucking jumper settings?

what the fuck is wrong with these people?

The term is not exactly new.
Or is this just a new ploy to make us all switch to S-ATA?
