Need a good cough supressant
My cold is still lingering, and now it's starting to affect my sleep. To be honest, I hate waking up and having to cough up gunk, but now I have this unproductive night-time cough that is keeping me awake.

Does anyone know a really good cough suppressant--one without an expectorant?

Keep in mind that I need to be careful about the sugar content in medicine.

Thanks.

2. Buckley's Mixture.

Tastes like a wino's socks, but it's quite effective.

13. I wish they sold that in the United States.
I've had the opportunity to use Buckley's Mixture while in Canada. It does taste horrendous...but, man, does it work.

14. I think it is available some places in the US.
In any case, plenty of internet sites sell it.

3. I hop over the border to Canada
and buy A.C. & C. they are acetlysalicylic and codeine tablets 200 tabs only 15 US dollars. Codeine is a cough supressant and I find them very effective when I have colds in getting a good nights sleep.

5. sorry but I never recommend suppressants they are dangerous..

cough has a purpose..supressing it can allow mucus, etc to compact and cause severe respiratory probs.

If the cough is unproductive you either need an expectorant to make it productive or something to soothe the bronchials..

I would try using vicks vapor rub before resorting to a suppressant..personally..it soothes the bronchials and usually helps stop nighttime cough..

If you have to try something else try vicks 44 cough syrup...or robitussin..

7. try the vicks vapor rub..
the cough is probably from irritation to the bronchials and vicks vapor rub fumes soothe them....it really does help..

11. Very effective
I try to stick to etheric oils (eycalyptus, mint, thyme, pine etc.) as long as possible to keep the gung fluid. Some onion next to your bed is smelly, but effective. If it gets worse, I switch to Gelomyrtol (I think you won't get it in the U.S.) which contains 120 mg Myrtol, Limonen, Cineol and á-Pinen. Pretty effective.

For "dry coughs" I recommend tea or even better juice of ribwort.

Only if a cough gets real, real bad, I try to convince my doctor to get codeine. That is really effective, but not nearly as the related stuff Bayer promoted 100 years ago:

12. Anything with Dextromethorphan (sp).
That's the most effective cough suppressant I've found. With me, it shuts down the non-productive coughing that's only exhuasting me, but it allows me to cough when I actually have something to cough up.

It's in alot of over the counter medications. Good luck.
