I am one of 4 siblings, the eldest. My parents had been planning to have only two children, but many years ago my maternal grandfather sat them down and explained to them that it was "their duty as intelligent and well educated people to have more children"; otherwise, he said, "the morons would inherit the earth". The first time I heard this story I kind of laughed it off...now I just don't know. Maybe it would have been better if I'd had a dozen brothers and sisters.

I have a friend who just had her first kid, and she says she wants 5 more, for exactly the reasons your grandfather stated - she strongly feels that cool, intelligent, educated creative people should breed more, and such people tend t breed less.. It smacks of eugenics, which bugs me, frankly, and there's maybe just a wee bit of self-flattery going on (who doesn't think they're cool and intelligent?) but there may be something to it.
