My grandfather is getting sicker, and I think I might need to get to Shanghai...

1. If you go to a passport office, you can get an expedited one
but it will cost you.

9. If you're in the right place
you can get an expedited US passport in 48 hours. But you need a full service passport office to do it.

5. Check out this link
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get_first_quickly.html

also, if you google passport, a couple of links come up indicating same day service. Not sure how legit though. Good luck.

7. DON'T use those private services - they sound like a ripoff

8. You pay to have to expedited
But you can get one inside of a week, or even faster if you pay enough. My husband got called for a tour in europe only a month before departure, and he had a passport within a week. Twas pricey, but it worked.

10. if you've never had one before?
you are going to have trouble getting to the PRC. Just so you know, you need a visa to travel there, and the PRC is notoriously slow with Americans, unless, of course, you are will to pay more.

But, you can, in fact, get a US passport in two weeks and two days. You can FEDEX your application, and pay for FedExing it back to you (if you aren't near a passport agency) It will cost you the $85 issuance fee plus a $60 expedited application fee. Plus Shipping. Say $200 bucks. Check out the Department of State's Passport Page http://travel.state.gov/passport/index.html for more info.

As for getting a visa for the PRC, http://www.travisa.com/China/chinavisa.htm">This site notes that 5 day processing will cost you $55 (for a once use visa) 24 hour processing will set you back $75. Worth noting that it is worth it, from my experience with the PRC, to go through an agency like this and pay them roughly the same amount of money, unless you live in a city with a Chinese Consulate.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, good luck.

11. I can get the visa no problem
I've already spoken with the Chinese consulate, and they're going to stay open late for me tonight to get me the visa.

Thanks...
