Herman Melville: subversive pointy-headed DU-type intellectual
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 02:35 PM by Richardo
As those of you who visit the Fiction forum may know, I'm reading Moby Dick for the first time and am enjoying it thoroughly. Magnificent use of language and a surprising amount of humor.

Came across this gem today:

"Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth: that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?"

Wow. Kind of explains the shipwreck-strewn coastline of the neocons, don't it?

1. Have you read the Night Inspector?
Might be a good follow up to Moby Dick, it's a wonderful historical fiction with Melville as one of the main characters. Written by Frederick Busch (Harmony Books, 1999).

3. Fantastic novel
easily the best American author in my opinion.

Look for a big-time Melville book in September...I can say no more. ;-)
