if you're VIP you can smoke in the dressing room but if you're not friends with the band that's probably not a good idea. They do let you out to smoke in this sort of enclosed pen at the front of the building.

but I called Irving Plaza and thet claim they have a little outdoor area for smokers; however I was unconvinced and am not real familiar with the venue.

that includes outdoor gardens, and enclosed sidewalk seating areas.
you may be able to in the VIP section, but i don't know how strict security will be.
I do know some smoking bars if you wanted...like Karma on 2nd ave btw. 3rd and 4th
