School bans Ketchup - students protest
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/26/education/26organic.html?oref=login&position=&adxnnl=1&8br=&pagewanted=print&adxnnlx=1101842857-b7rI7gvxVjkStmWC3iVQJg

Chef Bobo, decided that one of his first symbolic acts would be to ban ketchup. The children would never learn to appreciate fine natural food, he reasoned, if they kept smothering it in a sauce that masquerades as a vegetable.

At Halloween, a middle-school girl showed up dressed as a ketchup bottle with a sign around her neck: "Please Put Me on the Menu." What to do? Ketchup is back on the menu at Calhoun, but only once a month, and only organic.

Bobo was Derek Jeter's private chef for a while in addition to this gig. Next time I have one of those dreams where you are back in school (and haven't studied for the test or whatever), let it be this one. Bouley Bakery ...Mmmmmmmm.

3. WHAT?!? NO KETCHUP?!?
I'm a child of the Reagan 80s, baby! That was the only vegetable I got in my school lunches for awhile!

Besides, even ketchup contains the powerful anti-carcinogen lycopene that is present in tomatoes. It's a health food, goddammit!

5. wait a minute. fine natural food ... IN A SCHOOL CAFETERIA??
the only way most people ever got by on school cafeteria food was by smothering the slop in ketchup and other condiments.

oh, i get it! the idea is to be so revolted by the horror that is unadulterated school cafeteria food that they learn to appreciate fine natural food IN CONTRAST TO school cafeteria food. genius!
