This Floridian needs your assistance. My wife may be attending UGA in Athens next fall. We visited Athens and loved it, but it is quite a drive from Atlanta, which is where I would most likely be employed. I am not quite sure where to look for housing. I have been able to find lots of demographic data, maps, and pictures, but I want to get a better idea of what the towns in the region are really like. Are any of you locals, or have a lot of experience in the area? I was looking at Monroe, GA which is located 25 miles west of Athens toward Atlanta. From the 2004 elections results map, it looks like Walton county is freeper hell. Will they run us out of town with pitch forks? }( Any intel on the region would greatly be appreciated. Thanks DU! :hi:
p.s. We are mid-late 20's, moderate household inc. 50K (looking to spend up to 125K for home), three dogs, like both urban and small town, main street USA

1. Probably best to stay close to Athens |

My mother used to have a house in Tignall GA, not but about 25 miles from Athens. I didn't think the people were Freeper-mena, but I do know they were extremely conservative.

2. I live in Lawrenceville, GA... |

I grew up in Toledo, Ohio and moved to Athens in 94' when I was 24. Athens is a great town and UGA is a great school. You are very lucky. Unforunately you are right about the freepers. They are everywhere. It really sucks.
You will hate the traffic. Like I said, I live in Lawrenceville. It's half way tween Atlanta and Athens. I was in the same situation as you. My wife worked and went to school in Athens, while I worked in Atlanta. The traffic added two hours to each of my work days. I thought I would go nuts after the first two years. Eventually I got used to it.
Georgia is really not a bad place. Just to many freepers.
