"Rust Never Sleeps" CD this weekend, and probably some others. I had the LP but never had the CD...

And it's a good thread for reminding me what a true musical GENIUS Neil Young is (the word is bandied around so much), and what crap most music is that people listen to!

41. Thrasher.
THRASHER

They were hiding behind hay bales,
they were planting in the full moon
They had given all they had for something new
But the light of day was on them,
they could see the thrashers coming
And the water shone like diamonds in the dew

And I was just getting up, hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun
When I saw those thrashers rolling by,
looking more than two lanes wide
I was feelin' like my day had just begun.

Where the eagle glides ascending there's an
ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
where sleeplessness awaits
I searched out my companions, they were lost
in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science slashed
the pearly gates
It was then I knew I'd had enough, burned my
credit card for fuel
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand
With a one-way ticket to the land of truth
and my suitcase in my hand
How I lost my friends I still don't understand

They had the best selection, they were
poisoned with protection
There was nothing that they needed, they had
nothing left to find
They were lost in rock formations or became
park bench mutations
On the sidewalks and in the stations
they were waiting, waiting
So I got bored and left them there, they were
just deadweight to me
It's better on the road without that load
Brought back the time when I was eight or nine
I was watchin' my mama's T.V., it was that great
Grand Canyon rescue episode
Where the vulture glides descending on
an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums, galaxies and stars
Down the windy halls of friendship to the rose
clipped by the bullwhip
The motel of lost companions waits with
heated pool and air-conditioned bar

But me I'm not stopping there, got my own
row left to hoe
Just another line in the field of time
When the thrashers come and I'm stuck in the sun
like dinosaurs in shrines
Then I'll know the time has come to give what's mine

"In a while will the smile on my face
Turn to plaster?
Stick around while the clown who is sick
Does the trick of disaster."
(Makes me think of bu$h)

As for "Other," try "Revolution Blues" off "On The Beach" in 1974:

"Well, I'm a barrel of laughs, with my carbine on
I keep 'em hoppin', till my ammunition's gone.
But I'm still not happy, I feel like there's something wrong.
I got the revolution blues, I see bloody fountains,
And ten million dune buggies comin' down the mountains.
Well, I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars,
But I hate them worse than lepers and I'll kill them in their cars."

Hell, I bet Johnny Cash thought Neil Young was The Man!

61. Years ago
my brother was at a "house party" where Neil played with some guys calling themselves, I believe, "the Shocking Pinks." It was about 20 years ago, I think. He said that Neil was very interesting to talk to, and that he came across in real life as the same as he does on albums (or CDs today). Do you remember the Shocking Pinks? I am pretty sure that was the name.

I saw him in Syracuse years ago. The best concert I've ever seen, by far. It was at the NYState Fair.

71. My favorite too,
but it barely beats out Tonight's the Night and Powderfinger.

85. Always always been fond of
The Emperor of Wyoming, the instrumental that opens his self titled solo album. In high school in Green River, Wyoming, when I discovered dope and good music, I thought it was ubercool.

73. Rockin' In The Free World- lyrics-
"Rockin' In The Free World"

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

75. Hey Hey My My
and Keep on Rockin- which seems ever more apt in these media locked-down times; perhaps we'll have to sing the news to get it out?

79. "Expecting To Fly"
The hyper-produced bit of psychedelia by Buffalo Springfield--was my first Favorite Neil Young Song.

But the years pass & one goes through stages. So has Neil. From gentle acoustic to eardrum-destroying rock, Neil's got the song for the mood.

And how about an honorable mention for Neil's best cover tune--"Imagine" from the musical memorial broadcast after 9/11--the one where no flags were waved.

In my opinion the best anti-war song ever.

81. "Don't cry no tears"
from the Zuma album. He played at Roskilde Festival 2001, exactly a year after 9 young men were crushed, and when he opened with that tune, everybody knew it was going to be special. And it sure hell was - he ended up going 45 minutes beyond his scheduled time, but noone dared stopping the concert.

86. I'm a sentimental goof
Harvest Moon....

All the rest mentioned are great in their day but NY, by recording that song at that time in his life really makes me see how much he has grown as an artist......

Tell Me Why
Needle
Old Man

All are sentimental favorites...
