Ironically saw them both at the same place... the old Liberty Lunch in Austin, TX, which is now itself deceased. In fact, I had tickets to see Morphine again at the same place and the lead singer died on stage at the show before Austin. Doh!

though I hope not. I even liked their not-so-good stuff.

Darby did the corporeal disappearing act some time ago.

Patti Donohoue of The Waitresses -- Cancer.

INXS -- Saw them with the Go-Gos; I thought Gina Schock would be the first to go, but the heart surgery she had in 1981 worked quite well.

Lush -- Chris Ackland (drummer) took his own life right after they became semi-famous. They got a new drummer for the next two albums, but have disbanded.

I also saw the Dead Milkmen several times, and socially, too -- they were my neighbors when I lived in Philly.

Alan Mann -- Another local Philly rocker. He died after jumping out of a window to escape being burned alive in a fire. Actually, though, he did die of the burns rather than the fall.

Ben Vaughn Combo -- Aldo died about a year ago from lukemia. At one point, we were pretty tight. I hadn't seen him in years. That was a tough obit to read.

Morphine -- I also knew them from being a sleep tech and doing a polysomnogram on one of their parents (privacy concerns prevent me from saying more).

Warren Zevon.

I'm sure I missed some.

41. or "Straight to Hell"!
I love that Joe photo, by the way.

When he died, someone I know told this story about how they'd gone to see the Mescaleros a few years earlier, and were drinking in a diner near the venue before it opened.

The door swings open, and in walks this solitary figure in a big black trenchcoat, a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth, and a guitar slung over his shoulder.

It was Joe Strummer...who proceeded to sit down at the counter and have a shot of tequila with my friend and his friends.

"...an' if you're in the Crown tonight,
have a drink on me..."
