I played in a US Open a few years ago, got a plus score; but lost to a couple of grandmasters. I've beaten masters in tournaments in the past, but haven't spent much time on the game recently.
The instructional materials now are immensely better than they were in the 60s; the training materials which were on thousands of index cards in the old Soviet Union are now available in books or inexpensive instructional software. A good place to find some of this is www.convekta.com, or www.chessco.com in the US. Also, for people who want to get up to upper master level, books by Dvoretsky are very very good; and difficult.

5. I played in tournaments |

Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 11:02 PM by Yupster
for 20 years until my kid was born. Then I asked if I could take off for the weekend, but that didn't go over too well, so I haven't played tourney in 4 -5 years.
I was rated low 2000's for a while, but now down to low 1900's I think.
On edit, used to enjoy the Winnawer French the most. Have to change it to the Freedom Defense today.
