Actually, Randy Newman wrote a song to his first wife (divorced and living in another state). He wrote it maybe 20 years later while married to his current(?) wife.

Similarly, Bob Hope and Shirley Ross sang a song in the movie, "Big Broadcast Of 1938," called "Thanks for the Memory." This version is lighthearted on the surface, but is still a really sad song. While I couldn't get it to work, this is available as streaming real audio here:
