Babe Ruth's bat a big hit again back in New York
Times
From James Bone in New York

THE baseball bat used by Babe Ruth to hit one of the most famous home runs in American history has fetched a record price of more than $1 million (£516,000).

The legendary New York Yankees player told reporters on his first visit to the newly built Yankee Stadium in the Bronx: “I’d give a year of my life if I can hit a home run in the first game.”

It took him only three innings of that first game on April 23, 1923, to smack the ball out of the ground before a crowd of 74,000 ecstatic fans.

The home run took the New York team to a 4-1 victory over their arch-rivals (and Ruth’s old team), the Boston Red Sox. Yankee Stadium became known as “The House that Ruth Built”.

1. Insane.
Given Ruth's historical influence, you'd think the piece of carved wood would go for 10 times as much. :eyes:
