2. Orange Juice
I'm not a fiend of it or anything, but I used to gag when I'd taste it, now I enjoy sort of as a ritual every now and then.

Also, w/ alcahol.

3. Discovered deviled eggs in my early 20's, complete reversal.
Then just in the past 4 years since I've lived in Colorado I've come to adore guacamole. I just don't think restaurants in Massachusetts "got it". Very yummy--one of my favorite foods now!

4. Sweet potatoes
My mom would only prepare them one way...that ooey gooey sugar dripping crap with marshmallows on top. My siblings and I went on a ooey gooey sweet potato strike that still exists today. I don't even like sweet potato pie!

But my aunt, in an attempt to help her husband out with his new diet, came across a recipe of mashing sweet potatoes and adding freshly minced garlic...Damn that was good. And then I learned from my Japanese friends about how to roast them till just tender. And African roasted sweet potatoes with chicken.

From my cross cultural experience, I found new ways to eat sweet potatoes and probably a helluva lot healthier too!

12. I don't know... some of it is upbringing, I think.
My mother has a very strong aversion to sushi, "weird" cheeses (anything non-sliced American), tofu, etc. She's a meat-and-potatoes kinda gal from central Illinois who never really experimented with food. I didn't either until I really was on my own, in grad school in Los Angeles, though a boyfriend in college made lots of very good food, like mango-chutney-chicken pizza, etc. Was a wake-up call for my tastebuds.

The first time I had Indian food, in LA, was just amazing. I had no idea food could taste so good!

But for more standard foods, like popcorn and chocolate, I don't know where those changes came from. I used to hate olives, too, until I had kalamata olives chopped into hummus.

9. I used to like
pasta, spaghetti, lasagna. Now I don't. I think marinara tastes bitter and the noodles do something weird to my blood sugar.

I used to hate spinach, now I like it.

I used to love pizza and now I prefer Indian food.

I used to hate sushi, now I love it.

I have always hated cauliflower and peas and I STILL do! Blech!

15. I basically love anything that isn't really sweet
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 11:28 AM by da_chimperor
Chocolate is OK occasionally, but I have sort of an anti-sweet tooth. I love salty or sour stuff. Olives are my personal chocolate. I used to be a bit more into candy as a kid, but I was never nuts about it. Oh yeah, asparagus. I had some badly cooked asparagus as a kid and never ate it for at least 10 years. Then I had some wonderfully done asparagus and fell in love. :loveya:

17. Never had a beet and was sure they would be disgusting
A chef at on of our italian restaurants here served us a pickled beet salad with gorgonzola and walnuts - it was SO delicious. I've been craving pickled beets ever since.
