Is Grand Theft Auto-San Andreas racist?
I'm playing, and thinking it certainly is borderline. What do others think?

1. ALL the GTA games are racist
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 01:22 AM by kgfnally
but, if you can get past that, they're actually good antihero games. One of the few EVER that have been popular.

edit: if you want a fun, nonviolent, tough game, try Gitaroo-Man. It's addictive as hell, the music is GREAT, and it really, really grows on you.

And if you have a newer PC, go out and get Half-Life 2. Trust- it's the best PC FPS ever made. Period.

6. I don't really see how they're racist
they're just basically homages to violent/cheesy pop culture. The first one I forget exactly what it was inspired by. But the second was a combo of Scarface and Miami Vice.

This one is just a sendup of Early to mid 90's West Coast Gangsta culture.

2. How so. I intended on renting it tomorrow actually. I've only caught like
snippets of it at other guys dorms and apartments. But there was always a packed room so no chance of me getting a turn.

4. Rent it and check it out
You basically play a black protaganist who is trying to reestablish his street cred through various acts, including gang banging, robbery, graffitti, etc.

Its a great game, no doubt, but it is morally questionable.

22. Gang banging? As in the x-rated thing?!
It almost seems politically correct, GTA III SA. The original GTA III had a white guy as the protagonist.

The game itself is still sub-Jerry-Springer filth whose wading into reality crosses morality borders. (it's one thing to blow up robots and such in a sci-fi setting; but the GTA series are far less removed from reality. I had played GTA III and had to quit because I started getting tempted to run over people in real life. :scared: :wow: :scared: :wow: :scared: :wow: I gave my copy to a curious co-worker and haven't looked back. That stuff is beyond vile.)

3. I think it's very sterotypical, but I woulden't say it's racist
Why exactly do you think it's racist?

12. I traded my PS2 for an XBOX for a while
So I've been playing fable and some other games. Gonna get caught up in GTA later this week. So how does it feel to no longer have people kissing the ground you walk on? :)

I was totally drooling over fable for a while, but i'm about ready to trade back. I haven't done a drive-by in a while so my hands are starting to shake a little. :D

16. Yep
I am so behind my brother in San Andreas though, hes in the second or third city, and I am still in the base area. I need to get caught up on my football season in Madden too, I Am only on pre-season game 3. Eek but yeah its great. I am gonna get a few games for X-mas as well, the new medal of honor for the PC, the new Sims, the call of duty expansion for PC, and the Call of Duty for PS2, unfortunely for me right now, I cant play any computer games because of this damn tech problem I got.

17. Sounds like you've got quite a lot of goofing off to do
You're gonna have a lot of fun once you get out of los santos. The missions you have to do right after San ferro can get frustrating, but once you're through them you feel invincible. So what tech problem do you have? You've had something funny with your computer for a while, right?

My CD-DVD rom doesn't work for some reason and I got no sound either, tried calling the fucks at Dell today but was on hold for an hour and said fuck it. I am on loc's missions now, you know the wannabe rapper who is a lot like Jamie Kennedy in that movie he was in, Malibu's Most Wanted.

21. Yeah, that guy is annoying as hell
Have you done the dancing mission yet? It's kinda annoying, but not that hard if you focus and have good hand-eye coordination.

8. Well, I think sterotypical can be racist
in that it encourages and promotes dominant paradigms of how other racial groups act/behave.

14. I do agree, but it is just a game
meant for people 18 and above. If everyone is aware of a stereotype, having it included in a game which is pure fiction doesn't seem to be harmful to me. While it does nothing to dispel said stereotype as untrue, I don't think it hurts any.

9. Those games trade in caricatures of societies
So yes, there will be a lot of stereotypes--a realistic depiction of criminal society wouldn't be much fun. The real elements have to be simplified down and in that you will lose the humanity of the peoples depicted.

10. No
It depicts an era and a history. Except for the chopping people up, it's not out of line with that area at that time. It is not any more racist than it was when they used white people as the hero's/villains.
