If you had a daughter (or if you do) What would be her rules for dating? |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 03:13 AM by CalebHayes
I love this question because most of the time the parents like me much more than the girl does.

"If you have to drink, don't drink 'til you puke."
"You are free to refuse sex because your body is your own. But just in case you want to share your body, birth control pills and condoms are a must."
I'm basing all this advice on my own teen years. I got pregnant at 17 while on acid, so who am I to assume that any rules I, as parent, laid down would be followed? I might as well set common sense rules.

But then, I had teenage hormones raging through my system.
the cool thing is that now, 24 years later, I can still remember feeling the conception happen. That's what the acid did for me. And I have a great, visionary kind of son to show for it, so it turned out for the best. :)

Just look at the photo you include free with every posting. Cheney now has his own personal demon wth him at all times. I think it's something in the water at Halliburton sucks people's souls out. Totally worse than dropping acid (though just as freaky, really).

Unless they are rich.
The rest aren't really rules, they are more like guidelines. Of course, she's eleven, and some of that may change when she actually starts dating.

When you turn 18 I shall provide to you a fine man of my own selection. If you refuse to marry him, I will present you with another suitor upon completion of college. If you reject him, you are on your own and holiday conversations will feature your mother discussing at great lengths the recent achievements of the two rejected suitors and unfavorable comparisons between your chosen spouse and the suitors. In the event that you remain single, your mother will talk about the opportunities you squandered by rejecting the husbands that I offered.

Just kidding. She's 14 and I have chaperoned her dates. About now, she can go alone. I trust her and she knows the deal. In detail. It embarassed the hell out of me, but she got the whole score.
We were at a Modest Mouse show tonight and some guy said, why are you dating that old guy? She said, it's my father and I'm only 14, idiot. He thought she was a LOT older than she is. So, um, I keep a close watch.

I have always had a pretty open dialog with her. We just sort of wing it and asked each other questions. She is very sensible and mature, as if often the case in one child families.
I think I got of easy, I remember how I was. <shiver>

But I imagine I would have the same rules for a son or a daughter. I want to meet and have dinner with anyone they are planning to date one-on-one before they graduate from high school. They can go out with groups of friends if I've met at least one of the friends. And no dating on school nights.

he would tell my dates IF YOU DON'T BRING HER HOME ON TIME I WILL TWIST YOUR HEAD OFF AND STUFF IT UP YOUR ASS. They would bring me home an hour early and practically shove me out of the car. They were always wailing YOUR DAD THREATENED TO KILL ME despite my ineffective attempts to reassure them by telling them he was just kidding, he had never actually KILLED anyone. :o

32. He Comes to Dinner 2x Before Unsupervised Dates |
|
Logic:
1. I'd want the date to see how my daughter is treated with respect in her home and know we're looking out for her.
2. I'd want my daughter to see ASAP what difference, if any, in the treatment she'd get when the propective date is en pointe vs free-for-all.

My older girl didn't start doing any dating until she was 17 and it wasn't much then. She went to the prom with a close friend and she went on a couple of dates with another boy she met in a college prep program. Since she had infinitely more sense than I, I didn't really set any rules and she turned out fine. Married rather young, had two kids and will celebrate her fifth anniversary this Thursday.
My younger daughter had a billion boyfriends from about kindergarten on. She and her friends went out to movies and such in groups from about 13 or 14. My rules were that I know where they were going and who they'd be with and I would pick them up by, I think, ten o'clock. The travel in a pack thing lasted until she was 16 or 17.
I never had any trouble with either of my girls, really. We talked early and often about sex and peer pressure and pregnancy and STD's and all that stuff. They had and still have a lot of sense. The youngest is now dating a boy in the Navy (submarines). She's 22. Her sister is 24.

If I do have a daughter, I suppose my rules might depend a bit upon current culture as well as her individual personality. Regardless, I would have a good discussion with her about dating and such. My male best friend has a 14 year old daughter and says that he has a discussion every year on her birthday and discusses more every year as whe feels are pertainent. I suppose though that you have to be careful about the whole judging by personality thing. For example, my sister was very outgoing, had a lot of boyfriends, and had her first kiss earlier than me but did not have sex until she was in college. My mother had always worried about her. I, on the otherhand, didn't go out on a date until I was 15 which was the first kiss. Within a short time I was having sex with this guy and still had some misconceptions about sex, stds, and pregnancy. My mother didn't worry about me, of course though.
