is our Nanday Conure, believe it or not the only one in the roost that acutally thinks he is a bird. HE is spoiled still but praise teh bird, don't touch the bird, praise the bird...

There is Tuky, our cockatiel and first child... he has this wonderful big bird syndrome. He runs the roost and he is wonderful.

Finally Connie, a Sun Conure. She is a yong in and a Kamaina bird (was born and raised at Dan's Greenhouse in Maui) SHe is paper trained, as in potty trained and of course she is a mommy's girl...

And as usual, we don't run teh roost, the children do.

oh and one slight correction, are you sure I own them? I swear it is the other way around... I am their favorite pet.

8. 5 budgerigars, 2 ring-neck doves, take care of pelicans at a center
Cloud: born c. 1995, turqoise, dingy and no longer horny, but still active. Father of Little Cloud and Mosaic.
Little Cloud: big and light-blue, wants to take over planet, has cobra eyes, born Mar. 18, 1999. Bow to your empress! Daughter of Cloud.
Mosaic: shaped precisely like an avocado, small-headed lardbucket. born Mar. 26, 1999. Son of Cloud.
Sinclair: repellent fathead, keeps kissing everything in sight, has a melon head that swallows up his beak and eyes. Almost eaten by a cat, rescued by lemons (much like Anne Hjelle). Named for Upton Sinclair and Sinclair Lewis.
Julius: baby face, a pretty purple; very tiny and snuggles into Little Cloud. Flew into a preschool as a baby. Little Cloud now has what she always wanted: not a child, but an accomplice to the fact.

12. I am looking for a Meyers
They are so beautiful, and perfect for what type of parrot I'm looking for. I'm waiting to hear if the breeder's eggs hatch.

If not, I may look for a Senegal or Red Belly.

I used to have a cockatiel, Gwynneth and a Moustached Parkakeet called Rev (Reverend Jim). They have both since passed on (the latter was a rescue and I had no idea how old he was).

15. I was lucky enough to see Brown Parrot in the wild in Kenya
I call them Meyer's from way back and was informed that Meyer's is the bird breeder's name. We all think we speak English but we all have our own jargon!

Yeah, I think Brown Parrot is a terrible name too but I guess no more ridiculous than Yelow-Bellied Sapsucker or Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

They must be tough because not too many parrots survive in Kenya. Tons of other bird species. Tons of wild canary and finches you would recognize from the pet trade of years gone by. But not many parrots. African Grey may be extinct there.

I then developed a terrible alergy to him. When I say terrible, I mean by eyes would develop blisters and swell up terrible.....

Alas, parrots are probably the most affectionate animals on Earth, beating humans by a mile...

28. Are Quaker parrots quieter if you have two?
I have a female Quaker, Henrietta, and she squawks all day. She
makes so much noise that the upstairs neighbor has told the landlord
that she can't stand it.

She loves my husband and hates me. She screams if I come near him.
Really. But basically she screams all day and drives everyone nuts.
What to do?

little dickens had another egg yesterday.....figured something was up as she was spending a lot of time in the bottom of her cage.

Bird experts: I know cockatiels are known egg layers, but December? I wonder if she's getting too much light, still. Maybe I should start covering her cage at night??

20. strongly recommend covering the cage at night
For some parrots it isn't so important. For cockatiels it is strongly advised because some suffer from night terrors.

Over-production of eggs in 'tiels can be difficult to deal with but, sure, you could try shortening her exposure to daylight to simulate winter. Or get her some plaster eggs to sit on for awhile so she won't keep laying. I've occasionally heard of a serious case of over-production being dealt with by hysterectomy but this is a serious operation in birds and I would only consider it if bone or overall health was threatened and nothing else stopped the laying.

My 'tiel lived a long time but she did not lay eggs so she had the same life expectancy as a male. It is hard to know what sets them off when they don't have a partner.

These night terrors, they wouldn't be prone to them in a covered cage at night?

25. I'm owned by an adorable parrotlet, Grace.
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 04:31 PM by notmyprez
She's 19 months old. I used to have a parrotlet, April, who died a few years ago. Also had lots of budgies through the years. One was a white budgie named The Keet, and she was the sweetest bird I've ever met. She practically trained herself, and she had a vocabulary of around 100 words.

Two other birds own both me and my ex, though he has custody. (I have visitation rights.) They are a senegal parrot and a budgie.
