I saw the Pixies last night...
My wife managed to get some tickets the day before the show. I haven't seen the Pixies in 15 years. It was a good show. They did all the "hits".

Joey (guitar) and Dave(drums) seemed super stoked to be there. I guess since they didn't have the degree of solor work/success that Kim and Frank Black did that this was a dream come true for them and perhaps a last go-around. But just watching them play was infectious because they put their all into every note and seemed to be smiling the whole time.

This was a weird experience for me because usually bands with mostly cult level followings back then either broke up or kept trudging along at the same level. Or they were big and stayed relatively big (U2, REM). But the Pixies never got the recognition they deserved until way after the fact so to see them get this chance to sort of bask in their belated adoration was great to see.

1. Cool.
Did you get a CD of the show on the way out? I remember when they started the tour there were plans to have CDs of each evening at the close of the night.

11. I've seen 'em around
I saw them in November, and they were selling them before/during the show. It's a pretty cool idea-- an instant recording of the show you just saw, straight from the mixer desk, and CD-quality to boot. That's one way to beat the bootleggers!

5. probably weren't dancin' with broads.
As the OP pointed out, the Pixies weren't mega-huge when they were together, and I suppose between Frank Black and Kim Deal's solo projects + Kurt acknowledging that he was inspired by them to write "Smells like Teen Spirit," their star has risen significantly in the last ten years.

Kinda like when I saw a reunited Buzzcocks, or a reunited Wire, in the late 80s, now that I think about it.

6. They're playing like 8000 shows in NYC and I couldn't get tix
all sold out.

I've seen 'em before- and I think it's the best concert I ever went to. They have been my favorite band since I heard Doolittle when I was, like, 15, and are just consistently awesome. I'm so bummed I'll miss this. But I won't pay scalper prices.

Did you know that when Cannonball came out it sold more than all the Pixies albums combined? Just thought I'd mention it.

7. That would have been cool.
I doubt they're coming to New Zealand though. :-(

I once had tickets for the Pixies, two nights before thanksgiving 1989 in Boston but I didn't go as it was absolutely freezing out (really really cold) - a very stupid idea. Sort of like the time I had double booked myself and had to sell my tickets for the Replacements - on their last tour. Doh!

8. Have they introduced any 'new' songs into the setlist?
(Aside from the abominable 'Bam Thwok')

9. They didn't last night....
Although they did a cover tune by David Lynch and Mark Ivers that I think may have been from a Lynch movie but it's been so long since I saw any of this classics that it didn't ring a bell.

10. I saw them Nov 11 in St. Paul
...the start of the tour. They really did kick out the jams, all puns intended. I last saw them on the "Doolittle" tour, and IMHO they were better this time around-- more lively, less acrimonious to each other (at least, certain members were), and seemed to really enjoy playing together.

However, it was really weird, looking down on the floor, seeing all these high school-age kids who probably weren't even born when most of the music they were hearing was originally recorded. I guess it just goes to show how well so much of it has held up-- especially when you look at what's popular today.
