Question to DU ladies
I have a friend whose first name is Waldo, and whose middle name is James. He's a funny, good-looking guy who is able to charm the ladies. Recently, he started going by his middle name, James, because he believed that many women were turned off after he told them his name was Waldo.
My question is, are women that superficial where a guy's stock would fall simply because he has a dorky name? Would women find him more attractive if he introduced himself as James?

2. Would guys be attracted to a Hortense or a Bertha?
James is the better bet, if he's funny, sweet and reasonably good looking, I see no problem with him getting the babes.... :)

3. If a person is attracted to someone,
the name is the last thing they worry about. If this name change gives Waldo James more self-confidence, by all means have him go by James.

4. Waldo IS a goofy name.
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 06:26 PM by SarahBelle
If he was the proverbial nice/cute/smart man, I'd go for it. It would be kind of cute even. As long as he knew right up front if we ever got serious and had a son, there would be no Waldo, Jr. :P

Besides, I'm in the middle of a divorce with someone with Waldo's middle name for his first name, so I'd probably find Waldo much more appealing at this time.

I admit the first thing that comes to mind are the Where's Waldo? children's books. :-)

Edit: He sounds like a lovely guy.

7. nope, Waldo is a great name,
and i say any woman who doesn't like him just because of that doesn't deserve the funny, good-looking, charming man anyway.

8. I know someone named Harvey....
who is a really sweet guy. Made me change my attitude about the name.

But I still agree with my response below to DarthKitten...guys would not respond well to a woman named Bertha or Hortense.

9. I think it's a self-esteem issue?
Why would he care what the ladies thought about his name, as long as he isn't requiring a "Junior" ? Even so, "Wally"'s cute :)

11. It sounds like he may have some self esteem issues with his
name. If that's the case he should us James instead of Waldo. It will add to his charm if he is confident.

Having said that, I think I might feel odd calling someone Waldo. I agree with the "Where's Waldo" association.

12. Some women, yes
Sad to say, but as a single woman in my 40's, I'm amazed when men I go out with say that they have women who won't date them because they're bald, or because they don't have the 6 pack abs they had in their 20's, etc. At first I assumed that they were hitting on women that were too young, but they said no, it was women who were "age appropriate". If I found thinning hair or a bit of a tummy to be a turn off, my "dating pool" would shrink dramatically. I just can't imagine! So yes, some people, male AND female, are very superficial.

13. What was his mother thinking?
"Waldo" is a joke of a name. It's beyond nerdy. The only Waldo I know of is "Where's Waldo?" Let the guy change his name, so he doesn't have a strike against him, whether it be with women or in his career.

14. yep, some girls are that superficial !! (and some men)
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 06:50 PM by bettyellen
Wally is not too bad, don't people already call him that?
I bet he has had a lot of dumb reactions when giving his name, and that's why he needs to make the meeting girls thing less awkward.
People are a lot more superficial than they realize. I can imagine some silly girls calling there friends and saying I met a Waldo (or a Bertha) and their friends going, "Oh gross" resulting in the end of that.
I have had so many people tell me they can't take a Betty seriously, but I honestly hate using Elizabeth, I've always been known as Betty, and don't want to change it.
I can see that being James would help. Jim would be nice too!

15. his beliefs are the problem
if he didn't believe women were turned off by his name...he woudn't feel compelled to change it.
and yes: people, women and men, can be very shallow.
