And it's good that you didn't get hit. That's happened to me before. But luckily both times there wasn't any damage. But the first time I was in a BIG blue van and to this day I can't figure out how in the hell the woman who hit me didn't see me.

I had a guy -- of somewhat Freepish inclinations, doubtless -- hop out of his car after he'd done something like that to me at a gas station and I'd cussed at him and flipped him off. He waited until I had the gas nozzle in my car, then walked up to me, pointed a four-inch open switchblade at my throat and said, "you wouldn't want to lose that finger, would you?"

Now, I should explain I'm an average-sized woman of about 5'6" with no martial arts training. He was wearing leather pants, and if he'd done anything else I'd have moved the gas nozzle over to run down his legs. He didn't.

I said, "you do understand the concept of right-of-way, right?"

It was all I could get out. When he saw he wasn't going to get an apology out of me, he put the knife away and went back to his car, but it is a reminder that some people are just fuckin' loony and you want to be careful about flipping them off.

9. I'm guessing if I'd been a guy,

he wouldn't have been nearly as brave. He couldn't hear me cuss him out, all he could see was me flipping him the bird right before he didn't hit me -- I was actually turning into the lot out of traffic, and he pulled right in front of me on his way out.

Presumably, he wouldn't have been nearly as willing to try to intimidate a guy. Men like that usually have some kind of hangup about being smarted off to by women -- I've run into them before, I just never had one wave a switchblade in my face, before.
