Is This Anything? - A Computer "Episode"
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 03:55 PM by UTUSN
About two hours ago, when disconnecting from the net and logging off and powering off: It *did* disconnect according to the X on the icon, but a window stayed open with the error message, "Cannot find server," repeating endlessly with the time-elapsed bar at the bottom racing crazily over and over.

I did a control-alt-delete and pushed "End Program" on the can't-find-server thing, which wouldn't "take" and you couldn't cancel or click out of that window either. But then it did and went through the log-off/power-off program as usual.

I have Norton anti-virus and firewall. Just now in powering on and connecting to the net, there was a firewall warning about something or other (starting with a "G") trying to connect, which was blocked.

Then the danged Weatherbug, which I would just as well do without, was trying to do an update, which I refused. Could THIS be what it was?

So far after the strangeness, it appears to be as usual.

1. Hmmm, This (the original) Post Took Extra Long
to process. This is the first thing I have tried to do since powering on. Here goes the 2nd post.

2. I'm just about completely computer illiterate
So why I clicked on this thread, I don't know.

But I do know that you should stay far, far away from weatherbug.com - we had it once and it did nothing but cause us trouble. I'd uninstall that little guy ASAP. Good luck.

5. Thanks to 2&3. I'd Like to Get Rid of It
It pops up every time I connect, and I never use it, since even the t.v. weatherpods are usually wrong despite all their Dopplers.

In return for the advice, here's a true funny: A few years ago we had a hailstorm on a Sunday afternoon. The next morning at a convenience store the dude in front of me was telling the clerk he had had a good time golfing Sunday until, that is, the hail came down. Then he said, "But do you know who was out there, too? Joe-BLOW (the local weather guy)."

6. Funny, thanks.
Just go uninstall it. I kinda liked having it at first, it was nice to have the temp on my task bar all the time but it annoyed me by popping up all the time and seemed to slow things down a lot. I finally uninstalled it and I have a faster load time, it does not pop up to annoy me, I have fewer problems in general. I just put my own weather guide on my task bar and I check it whenever I need to know. You will be happy if you do that I think. Maybe it isn't that big a problem for you but it certainly made my online time more prone to cussing.

4. WeatherBug is BIG BAD VOODOO!!!!
Get rid of it, then run Ad-Aware or some other pgm, you'll be suprised. I've seen WeatherBug KILL workstations! It comes with a huge number of spyware buddies when installed!!!

8. O.K., I Have Uninstalled WeatherBug (I Think)
I would like to uninstall a lot of stuff, but am spooked, since this computer has not had a single problem in a 1½ yrs, and the previous one put me through Hades for weeks before I finally SENT it to Hades.

So far there has been no repeat of the "episode" and the posts have been processing as usual. Thanks all.
