ATTN: Grammar Police. I need guidance
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 05:16 PM by Cyndee_Lou_Who
"If you have any questions please contact Carol or myself."
or
"If you have any questions please contact Carol or me."

I always thought the latter. The rule I think of is - remove the "Carole or" and which word would you use?

Am I totally wrong?

On edit: I misspelled grammar... ha

1. NEVER use "myself."
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 05:16 PM by Worst Username Ever
"Me" is correct. "Myself" was just though up by some military guy or cop who though it sounded cool and official.

Just take the other subject out of the sentence, if it sounds right it is.

4. "me"
it's an object. "You" is the understood subject.

Think about it in another sentence with "You" as the subject and my/myself as the object.

You like me.
You like myself.

6. I agree with you.
I learned the same rule you did from the good nuns in high school.

The current popular use of "myself" instead of "me" bugs me almost as much as fingernails on a chalkboard!

19. I agree.
However, many of those are just typos -- a result of the fingers moving faster than the brain -- and poor proofreading.

I'm an editor and come across it a lot in work from people I know know better. I also know that it's very hard to proofread your own work, because your eye sees what you meant, not necessarily what you typed.

7. The grammatically correct answer is
to use 'Carol or me.' But I write in terms of what sounds better, because most people read aloud to themselves. I think 'Carol or myself' sounds better.

Just my style; for what it's worth, I used to be a copy writer/editor. But am no more.

But I've been drinkin' scuppernong wine since shortly after 2 in the afternoon, and have yet to take my first bite of actual food for the day. I'll prolly be in REAL good shape for some lounge-stalking tonight. ;-)

13. "ME" is correct.
I try never to use "myself." Maybe that's just me. But I loathe the word when it's used as you have it in your first sentence.

I am a Grammar Queen of the Second Order. (Not of the first because there's too much I DON'T know about proper use of the English language.)

21. Don't use 'myself' in that context - ever
I never did anyway, but the proofreader at my old company made it a rule. Some people don't think you should ever use the word at all - I use it sometimes (as in "I did it myself", though I know that bothers some people.) I never use it in business writing.

23. The word 'myself' has
legitimate uses. This is not one of them.

It is a self-referential pronoun and should be used that way.

ex: I ate that whole thing myself.

What really gets under my skin is when people say, "Me, myself, and I". Oh that just burns my toast! :grr: Just kidding, I'm just boosting my post count.
