Warm shoes?
OK. Most of my shoes are work shoes I have from the days I trudged to and from a law office, meaning, they're conservative, leather, impractical pumps. I have a few casual pair that aren't good for cold weather. I have a nice pair of leather boots with slick leather soles that I don't want to drown in sleet and snow b/c I love them, paid a fair amount for them a few years ago & can't afford to trash them, and I also don't think slick leather soles are practical for icy, cold sidewalks.

So, who cares, right? My problem is I need a warm pair of boots that are relatively versatile for both casual and perhaps business (but casual business) wear. I've gotta take a trip to Helsinki, Finland next week, I need a warm pair of boots that I can wear with jeans but also with my all-purpose black wool pants and blazer if I get called into a meeting at a university.

I need them by this Friday at the latest, I need them in black, and I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'll need to order them online b/c I live in the boonies and don't have access to many stores.

Can any of you cold-weather people offer any suggestions?

2. yeah, I meant to edit my post ... I did
and if they're warm, they're usually really bulky and not terribly versatile. Thought maybe someone might know of a local mountain gear shop that has all purpose boots. Hmm

3. Try some black lace up work boots
J. Crew carried them a few years ago. I don't knwo if they still have them. Or how about Doc Martins?

And invest in some really good socks. By the boots big and wear two pairs of socks.

5. I'm in Colorado and unless I'm going to be in extremely deep snow

I usually rely on these:

Women's Merrell Satellite Moc Gore-Tex XCR
Item # 25715 shown here at www.onlineshoes.com

Merrell shoes are the most comofortable I've ever worn and these are extremely warm with goretex, so you know they are fully water proof. Good soles too, but i would pick up a pear of Yaktrax Walkers (they are a little 19.95 device that slide on your shoes to give you the ultimate traction on ice and are easily pulled on/off-- lots of places sell them, includeing the yaktrax.com website and amazon.com). http://www.yaktrax.com/content/00/01/32/62/63/userdirectory30.content/342597.vmg

I do own lots of boots, both short and full height--most by Santana, a Canadian company that makes really good and warm leather dress boots. But, I save these for the occasions I really need to wear a dress and we are expecting deep snow. or for after ski wear at a resort. You can undoubtedly search google for an online source for Santana. But, for sheer warmth and comfort, you just can't beat merrell--they do sell some boots too--you might check them out.
