I lived in Germany for 3 1/2 years ( came back May 2004 ) - I only got to experience Germany but its a beautiful country . I lived on the country side near Hanover ( Hannover ) in Lower Saxony ( Niedersachsen auf Deutsch ) . The fields of yellow flowers that bloomed and adorned the fields in the summer time , the field of deer that grazed on grass , the old cobblestone streets , the museums and old houses from the Middle ages , the castles ( I went to Castle Buckeburg , very nice indeed , the chapel was partly enamored in gold , big halls ) , the food , the people are very laid back , my bf ( sigh ) , I could go on and on - OH HOW I MISS IT SO !!! A part of me is still in Germany , I can feel it ... I am still not used to America again ...

9. Honestly ...
I came back because I wanted to vote for Kerry in person ... that is straight up my # 1 reason for wanting to come back to the States ... but I will go back there one day in the future because I loved it there . I snuck and got a Passport when I was 19 and went there on my own , not telling my family I was going until the day before my flight left - they supported me surprisingly . Living in Europe changed my life and my perspective on " life " , America and the world in general . Sometimes you have to actually step out of the picture to see the big picture ;) And they actually have real news there - Can you believe that ?!?!?!?! LOL :)

3. Universal health care
lack of dire poverty, and a culture that doesn't disdain intellectualism and art. The result is, a nice place to live.

11. With the knowledge that they won't.............
do without healthcare or concern for their retirement, European tourists are able to enjoy vacations.
And, yes, it's beautiful.

7. Oh we could have nice things
if we didn't tear everything down to put in a box store. Plus if we valued the arts more, studied our collective history better and if we weren't scared of intellectual thought, we might have nice things. And, if we the people turned the TV off once in awhile, we might have even more nice things.

10. We do have nice things, we just take them for granted.

Europe, the U.S., the moon, everywhere has nice places for tourists and not-so-nice places. Visit Birmingham or even the seedier parts of London if you want confirmation.

My husband is British and he and his friends complain about Europe and how the US is much better. It is the natural tendency of everyone to yearn for what they do not have. I always tell my husband how lucky he is to be from Britain and he tells me how lucky I am to be here. We're both lucky. There are good things and good people in both places.

12. Couldn't have put it better
Indeed, there are very pretty places in Europe, but also ugly, boring and hideous ones. Much of our old cities and villages have lost their beauty due to need, greed, negligence or just carelesness for their historic beauty.

But I still like it here!

13. I suppose most of it comes down to history..
.. and peopls wish to preserve that history. Take for instance my local Cathedral, which has stood on this earth for around 600 years now. And if you count the previous churches that were built on nearly the same location, the history would go back even further. Perhaps even back to when Roskilde was founded, somewhere around year 1000 (the official year is 997). That's almost 500 years before Columbus headed east.

14. Years ago...
I went back to Germany with a friend who had never been to Europe.

Drove from Frankfurt through the Rheinland, Netherlands, Belgium, France, and back into Bavaria and Austria. No time to get to Italy, Spain, or a few other places I've been.

She was constantly asking "Where are the slums." "Where are the beat up old cars?" "Where's the mess... the pollution..."

Not that she actually wanted these things, you see, she just couldn't get over how well things seemed to be run and how nicely they took care of things.

Then, we got back home....
