Nominees for the worst commercio-corruption of a good old rock song?
I was thinking of the "Wrangler" commercial that came out a while back where it plays the first few chords of CCR's "Fortunate Son" to make it seem like some flag-waving ditty. They come on with a tight shot of a tight ass in blue jeans with CCR playing , "Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue " and then stop before the song goes on to

"And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief",
oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,"

I know, I know it means our heroes of the past have sold their lyrics to the highest bidder-but it still pisses me off.

1. I'm not sure, but I think the album the Who Sellout was
pretty prophetic. Yuck on them and they used to be my favorites

Let My Love Open the Door - (I know it Pete only, but still) for a JC Penney commercial!

25. i was just about to mention the JC penney ad....
....it may not be the most grotesque sellout...but i must've seen the ads a gazillion times now and it never fails to get me to change the channel.

it almost makes me want to throw out "all the best cowboys have chinese eyes".

22. Actually, there's an interview of him in 1965
where he's asked what he'll be doing in 30 years, and his answer is something like "selling ladies underwear"

3. As a huge Led Zep fan
It is a bit distressing to me when the song, "Rock and Roll" comes on advertising Caddillacs. Especially since they are Caddillac SUV's.

8. I've gotta go with "Fortunate Son"
although I was pretty upset to hear Hendrix in a commercial recently.

I can recall the first time I heard a popular tune corrupted on television. It was the theme from The Bridge on the River Kwai and it was used in a Malt-o-meal commercial:

Winners warm up with Malt O Meal
Winners warm up with Malt O Meal
.......
Yech

16. John Fogerty didn't give Wrangler permission
to use his song -- he doesn't own the publishing rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival songs "Fortunate Son" included -- lost them because of a bad contract with Fantasy Records and was famously bitter about it. Fogerty also hates that the song is misused/misinterpreted as being a flag-waving anthem.

17. John Densmore of the Doors
Wrote a great piece in Rolling Stone a couple years ago, stating his refusal to sell out the Doors' music. Apparently the other surviving members wanted to sell "When the Music's Over" to Apple for an obscene amount of money, but he was the lone holdout. I guess the Doors, from a legal standpoint, are a democracy, so everything must be decided unanimously. It's admirable that he sticks to his principles.

18. John Fogerty was in litigation for years
over ownership rights with CCR. He was emotionally devastated over the loss and didn't sing those songs for years until Dylan encouraged him to reclaim the music.

He recently wrote a great anti-war song, Deja Vu - All Over Again, and toured with Bruce for "Vote For Change". Fogerty is not a sell out, but disgusted with how the music industry works.
